28. I used to commute over 100 miles a day

and I was earning a little over $8.00 an hour and the job was part time (20 hrs. a week; if I was lucky enough to get more hours they gave me "compensatory time off" - no money). Paycheck for an entire month was $707.00 after deductions!

There are a hell of a lot of people here in the USA that don't even make that much and still have long commutes. It is literally *killing* the working poor!

Interesting, isn't it? Although I live in a very "busy" suburban area with a major shopping mall and many stores and restaurants within 3 miles, the nearest bus stop (for local busses) is 1-1/2 miles away and the nearest long-distance bus stop is 8 miles away. The nearest train stop (and the trains only go north and south along the coastal cities), is 5 miles away. I live in an area that, comparatively speaking for the US, is rich with trains and busses. You can see that if you are disabled or elderly in the US, it is not an easy thing to get where you need to go without a car.

As I was just telling my husband last night - you get what you pay for. Our government (which we, of course and unfortunately, elected) has not seen fit to provide the infrastructure necessary for traveling, other than for automobiles. Even then, a lot of our roads and bridges are crumbling. In the entire country, outside of cities, many, many areas are not served by any kind of public transportion. Without our cars, we are stuck. Period.

P.S. Wales is one place I'd like to visit some day. Some of my ancestors, way back, came to the US from Wales by way of Ireland in the 1600s. The name was Vaughn. From the photos and films I've seen, that's a lovely country you have.

I drive very little too. I gassed up last week at Costco for $3.03 a gallon. I won't be needing gasoline for at least another few weeks luckily. I don't see how the hell people working crap jobs that have long commutes (my former situation years ago) can make a go of it. You get 10 cents off per $50 purchase. Get $300 worth of groceries...get 60 cents off per gal.

This includes groceries, dry cleaning, prescriptions, movie rentals, gift card purchases...basically anything you can get in these large grocery stores except milk products and tobacco.

If you have a family to feed plus consistent dry cleaning bills, it doesn't take long to accumulate 50--80--or even $1+ off per gal.

It's a GREAT deal and since it's a real break for the entire middle class, I'm sure some a**hole politician will find a way to stop this program...until then, I'm taking full advantage.

The advantage I have is that I live in a major urban area (Seattle, if that wasn't obvious.) Within a 1.5 mile radius (a comfortable 30 minute walk for me), I have:

* my place of employment
* 3 large, major chain supermarkets
* a farmers' market (in season)
* the much larger (and more distant) Pike Place Market
* the downtown retail core
* more than three dozen restaurants, ranging from casual to informal to dressy
* about a third of the city's movie screens
* stops for about half the city's buses for when I need to travel beyond my walking radius

And various other amenities. :hi:

All in all, I am very lucky about where I live; going without a car would be much more difficult if I lived elsewhere.

Since your manual calls for premium, checking out the effects of using midgrade is indeed a good idea (although with 157K miles, it might be a moot point!).

My car calls for premium, too. It will burn regular, but I can feel the difference, and I can see the difference in fuel economy .. I lose about 1.5 mpg with regular (that's calculated. I've recorded nearly every drop of fuel that's gone in the tank over 55,000 miles)

OTOH, at a .20/gallon difference, when the price is over $3.00, the difference between a tank of regular, and a tank of premium isn't that much. (just 3-4 dollars)

Over on a Scion board (Scions burn regular) a participant is experimenting with premium to see if there is any affect. The hypothesis is that with electronic ignition, and fuel injection, having the higher octane will allow the computer to advance the spark timing more that it could with regular fuel. Advancing the spark timing could possibly (possibly .. that's what he's testing) increase fuel economy.

I know that propane is cleaner burning than gasoline, but I don't think there's as much energy per unit volume (ie, you've got to burn more for the same power) That last, though, is a vague recollection, and could certainly be way off base.

I needed to fill up today, and didn't. My fuel light came on as I left the grocery store (close to home thank goodness). I have 1/8 tank to last until I fill up again. I was hoping with the few pathetic changes coming in today, that tomorrow the gas will be cheaper.

My DH takes the train into the city, but he still has to drive to the next town to catch the train. Unfortunately we don't have any buses out here.
