Nagin, Landrieu Leading in New Orleans
Mayor Ray Nagin and Lt. Gov. Mitch Landrieu broke away from a crowded field in early returns from Saturday's first mayoral election since Hurricane Katrina, a tricky experiment of modern-day democracy that gave scattered evacuees a say in this battered city's future.

With 16 percent of precincts reporting, Nagin led with 32 percent of the vote, followed Landrieu with 31 percent and nonprofit executive Ron Forman with 19 percent. Nineteen others trailed far behind.

Unless one candidate gets 50 percent of the vote — a prospect that even Nagin considered to be unlikely — the top two vote-getters will compete in a May 20 runoff. "We believe we're gonna be in a runoff for mayor of New Orleans," Forman said of the early returns. "It's been a 3-man race from the beginning."

Elections officials say turnout was steady and unusually problem-free. And while figures were not immediately available, the racial mix of voters at polling places appeared to bely critics who said the methodology of the election could exclude many blacks who make up most of the storm evacuees.

6. Proud of New Orleanians!
Most of the African-American areas are uninhabitable - I was concerned that the Repubs might get a larger percentage. I didn't think Wilson would do well, but you never know. She would have been a disaster.

It seems a lot of displaced residents were able to vote, and white New Orleanians voted Dem. Of course I know almost no Repubs there now. All of my old right-wings friends are either disgusted and quiet, or actively oppose the Repubs.

7. And the sad thing is she will be back, and back, and back

Peggy had never been able to get it. Sad thing is there are qualified republicans in Orleans Parish that could run and actually bring something to the debate. I'm sure the republicans that didn't vote Democratic were glad Couhig was there for their vote for the sacrificial lamb.

10. landrieu
nagin is a republican who switched parties to run as a democrat since only democrats can be elected in new orleans, however, he is a traitor who supported jindal against blanco in the governor's race and is basically always propping up the GOP party line

he isn't just incompetent, he isn't just a crybaby, he's a down and dirty GOP in sheep's clothing

mitch can't do a worse job than nagin and at least he won't be giving props to the GOP every time there's a statewide or national election

forman would have been better in some ways because he would not have needed to be so politically polite in difficult situations, because his sister is not the senator, and forman is more of a visionary, but on the other hand i think many people were not happy to lose him at audubon institute where he has done a spectacular job and where his leadership will be needed more than ever

mitch will be fine

11. I never followed NOLA politics until Katrina
I agree. I like Landrieu. He sounded the best on the debate.

The Decider is not a popular man down in New Orleans.
