The NYT interviewed families of 260 victims to find how they died. The hurricane didn't kill them. The stories are heartbreaking - and it DIDN'T HAVE TO HAPPEN.

Larry had been diagnosed with cancer a few months before the storm. He was evacuated to a hospital outside of the city where he passed about a month after Katrina. The neighborhood didn't get to say goodbye to him so on his birthday a couple of weeks ago, we met on his porch to all drink RedBull beer in his honor.

You are sorely missed Larry!

2. Indeed, most of the NOLA deaths didn't occur from the hurricane, but

from a civil engineering failure. The levees failed because of excess water from the storm, but the city wouldn't have flooded so badly if the levees had been fortified and built right. :grr:
