First Muslim congressman elected

Keith Ellison, a Democrat, has become the first Muslim to be elected to the US Congress by winning a Minnesota seat in the House of Representatives.

He overcame personal attacks emphasising his past association with Louis Farrakhan, leader of the radical Nation of Islam group.

The 43-year-old lawyer sought to downplay his religion and ran on a populist platform.

1. Indeed, a great step forward.
It speaks to this man's character when all his opposition can dig up on him are sloppy taxes, parking tickets and his work with the NOI on the million man march.

Sloppy taxes and parking tickets... sounds like me. :)

And Ellison ran a clean campaign on a very progressive platform that included universal health care.

I think he presents a very good example of American Muslims to the rest of the nation.
