3. Mom used to drop 'em in a bucket on Friday night when we got home.
We were supposed to wash the sneaks from gym class once a week. She dropped the sneaks in a bucket of water with a squirt of dawn (is there anything that stuff won't clean?) and they went in the washer on Saturday afternoon.
Then she hung them in the sun until time to pack school bags on Sunday night.
BUT... we went through three pairs each, every school year. The process is hard on the rubber and the glues. Keds hold up better, but there were a lot of times when Keds were out of budget and she had to go with no names (especially when one of my sisters was growth-spurting.)
Fill your sink or a bucket with HOT water and add a cupful. Stir until it's dissolved and then throw the sneaks in. Let soak for an hour or so and then throw them in the washing machine. This also works terrific for white shirts. You can also use a stiff brush and a whitening toothpaste.. scrub with a little water and then wash.
