1. I'm at a loss
Do women really walk around with teeshirts proclaiming themselves to be a "ho," with drawings of a woman with her underwear around her ankles?

I think I'm on some kind of overload here this month, I just feel completely beaten down by the nonstop nature of the message.

11. This old friend of my husband...
from high school has a photo in her MySpace gallery where she is wearing a tank top that says "Marry Her, Fuck Me" in big black letters.

Some women are worse than men.

12. Talk to my young feminist about this again this weekend. I do not
understand how she does not see this as misplaced misogynistic junk. Since there is a 28 year difference in our ages, maybe I am just not current. And then again maybe she just cannot see the truth about this since this is her friend's website. I still see it as demeaning to women. I do not care how much money it is making for its creator.

14. Indeed.
Not only is it just... tasteless... It's clear she lacks self respect.

16. Exactly.
I really disliked the whole "trend" of women "labeling" themselves with such terms. I about lost it the first time I was out and saw young girls (maybe 10) with words emblazoned across their bottoms (I think it was HOT or HOTTIE). It was all I could do to not have a peta moment and start throwing paint on it.

The girl was with her mom. So apparently parents allowed their girls to wear that crap. :( I know it's hard as a parent, and sometimes it's just easier to let them do what everyone else is doing and not have to fight (I'm guessing, I'm not a parent).

...if I had a daughter, she's just have to hate me, as there's no fucking way I'd allow my DAUGHTER to put a label other than LEVIS anywhere near her ass.

2. Dumb
And damaging. Part of the we-CHOOSE-to-be-exploited and this is freedom mentality. Sometimes I think around the same the word feminist was demonized many young (and not so young) women--who have no clue about female sexual history, did some sort of collective coscienceness thing to find a replacement. (Some try to call it "third wave" feminism, but not all of our third wave young sisters embrace this, by no means) Aided by media, and the good ol' boy system, (One of the reasons strippers make the money they do in the profession they defend) they somehow missed every guess and every genderized cultural clue and decided being a ho was a good thing. Part of it is in your face rebellion, but somehow, the rebellion is one sided, and keeps not only the virgin/whore paradigm intact, but feeds the dominance of male sexuality.

And They Don't Get it.

(Strippers say, hey say "I make money, men do what I want--I'm exploiting THEM"

And I think, Guess what sister, I heard the same tired old song and dance in the 70's. Having been there and done that I saw the prices paid out. Putting your way though college? Great. But don't bullshit ME about the cost.)

Exploring ones sexuality, taking responsibility for it, being brave and bold, turning a back on the status quo, joining in the ages old human mating rituals, I understand. I "get" alternative sexuality, even though the apparent continued 'need' saddens me in ways I can't explain.

I don't get, and my daughters don't get--(lest 47 be too old) the idea that sexual freedom is being able to call yourself a ho. Or understand why anyone would think that since it's so very, very easy to make money as a sex worker, or use female sexuality to promote anything that 1)it's a new idea and 2) means sexual freedom.

Perhaps having rejected the word feminist, or thinking "old school" feminism has accomplished all it can, and being young and unaware, it's a you can't beat 'em join em fest. These young women are probably honestly be searching for sexual autonomy in the best way they know how, in a world that welcomes them on the surface. To me, it's like bleeding in water surrounded by sharks.

3. Thanks for your opinion. There is known connection to the person
who is making money on this product. (Who btw is a young devoted wife and mother and not a "ho on the go".) A young feminist I know and respect thinks this is a great way to make money from women's sexual freedom. I find it appalling and am dumbfounded (once again)by other women's inability to see the harm it does.

4. she's not much of a feminist, is she?
despite what she thinks.

I think ismnotwasm's post is quite eloquent, but in addition, here's the best argument about that exploitative "sexual freedom" meme I've ever seen:

5. Yes that is excellent!
I worry you know, about young women. I work in nursing, some of the best feminists I know about are nurses, but those tend to be older. The pattern I see is either young women embrace the "sex positive" (they may not know what to call it) lie, Or they join a mega church. Or get married. (Virgin/whore again)
It's not as cut and dried as that of course. There doesn't seem to be a place for women to just be the sexual beings we are. We are monitored, controlled, standardized, labeled, bought and sold. And feminists are the 'bad' guys. How the hell did that happen?

I like this part;

"So let me get this straight, women are just going to copulate their way into equality and liberation?! And copulating will promote social and economic freedom? Hmmmm, I wonder why no one has ever thought of this before?!

Well... probably because they have. Goodness knows humans have been having so-called sexual revolutions since the beginning of time. Because I'm pretty sure humans have been having sex since the beginning of time. In fact, the last time society had a so-called sexual revolution wasn't all that long ago. Unless the 1960's are considered a "long time ago." As I remember it, people were waving the same banners. It was considered radical and revolutionary. And women were supposed to be liberated and freed by it"

What I'd like to see--my hope-- is is a even playing field between men and women. Something that doesn't exist. And the fact it doesn't exist isn't exactly a secret, but folks sure like to pretend otherwise.

7. Yes, an even playing field would be nice
It would be very nice to just be allowed to BE. Be who we are.

I like that excerpt too.

6. Immature is one word. Tasteless is another.
I don't see anything wrong with marketing a fun, sexy overnight bag (can promote planning and safe sex), but using the word "ho" is so ... scummy and unpleasant.

8. You really hit the nail on the head. The concept of "being prepared"
(sorry Boy Scouts) is an excellent one. The idea that one is a ho in order to do so is degrading and would puts an excellent concept at risk.

10. It would be "stud" on the go if it were targeting men.
The double standard endures.

15. A few years ago my husband & I were shopping for jeans.
The cashier was located by the girls clothing department. On display were some tee shirts with sayings like, "I'm a hot tamale" & "I'm a sweet little cherry." I couldn't beleive my eyes. To see something like that in the woman's department would have been bad enough, but in a department for young girls??????
