It's just outrageous that some of us "progressives" are so forgiving of sexist remarks--in fact some of the replies to the original posts (see the first one, for example) seem to see it as a badge of honor.

Years ago Jimmy "The Greek" Snyder was banished from the airwaves for making one racist remark. Why is racism obviously intolerable (except to the most extreme members of our society) but sexism is still accepted in the mainstream -- and AMONG "LEFTIES", no less?

Oh yes. Calling someone a Slut (Randi Rhodes) is just "knowing the terrain.". Getting UPSET that a prominent Radio Personality routinely uses the word "Slut" to describe any female he doesn't agree with is just being an "intolerant and terminally PC liberal"

Sad sad sad. I had no idea there were so many self-loathing types out there. I'd hate to be a woman who hated myself. Must be so limiting.

4. Ignoring sexism is not the same as forgiving...

I don't know to what extent the person in question was making remarks but sometimes the message is more important than the messenger.

As much as we all hate labels, we often use them to emphasize. Knuckledragger, redneck, fundy, bimbo, trailer trash, etc. are used as a type of shorthand to describe somebody in as few words as possible. Some are gender related terms but when used in political context or humor or in rants--is it always sexist?

5. Damn! How did I miss all those DLC bashing posts?

I often feel like I'm the only one out there who recognizes that the New Democrats/DLC are LOSERS whose tactics have cost us all 3 branches of government by costing us the party's working class base.

It's always the same bullshit, too. "We'll lose MODERATES!" traslation: we haven't gotten anybody to defect from the GOP, but if we become more like them, maybe they will. Or "We've got programs that will work for EVERYBODY!" translation: everybody who is a yuppie.

The occasional lapse into sexist language is something I'll wince at, but I won't make a huge case over (although Rhodes using a sexual slur at another woman is low). The DLC and their search for antichoice candidates (their new "moderation") infuriates me completely.
