The Swedish model of dealing with the issue of prostitution.
You may have heard of this before, it has been in the news for a good few years now, but Sweden has found a way to deal with prostitution which actually reduces demand for buying sex, and in turn has virtually eliminated the problem of human trafficking there.

That is not to say that there are no problems there anymore where the buying of sex is concerned, but they are greatly reduced.

For anyone who thinks, as I do, that prostitution is harmful not just for the vast majority of the people who are in the industry, but also for society as a whole, here are some links to show that there is hope for positive change.

1. i know. and still there is the knee jerk reaction that prostitution should be legalized
people wont look at the facts... yes, sweden is in the forefront and countries that legalized are looking to them for the answers.

2. The entire world is so steeped in misogyny.

So steeped in entitlement... in this case, the entitlement to access to another person's body for their own sexual gratification.

4. I think I'll be posting in GD about it fairly soon.
I think the fact that prostitution is violence against women needs to be said quite clearly, and often, until people start acknowledging what is happening... that it's not just happy hookers and damn the rest. The very idea that buying sex is in any way acceptable fuels all of it.

5. Are you ready for the, "What about MALE prostitution? Hmm?" red herring?
I'd wager that at least 20% of responses take that route.

6. Haha, yes... I do anticipate those responses... :)
which is why I'm going to use language that includes all prostitutes... young boys are coerced into it too, although not in the same numbers of course... so I'll just say people (including children) and go from there.

It really makes me sad that the overhwelming amount of violence and destruction that this 'industry' creates is just ignored... just completely blanked... and for what? So people can continue to think that buying sex is no big deal. Heartbreaking, really. It's a failure to see each other as humans on a very, very fundamental level, IMO.

8. And lest we forget
the rabidly anti-choice Ron Paul... SUPPORTS LEGALIZING PROSTITUTION.

:puke:

Thanks, Ron, for reminding us AGAIN that all we are, are cum-bucket baby ovens.
