Gail Dines' Presentation to the Feminist Anti-Pornography Conference

My view has always been that pornography is as much a threat to women as

"The Hammer of Witches" -- in a sense, it is as successful as propaganda

as any organized campaign of propaganda has ever been --

The Bible as organized propaganda against women --

Whether we think of the Vatican or Nazi propaganda against the Jews --

Or the organized propaganda -- including the Bible -- which argued for the

right to enslave Africans here -- and Segregation, itself -- and the propaganda

surround it --

And, of course, the thousands of years of organized "Christian" propaganda verus

homosexuals --

4. It is such a huge industry and if it makes that much money,
it will not get touched. Funny how that works.

6. Porn, as it is
Is not only anti-woman, but more it damages the spirit and takes away sexual imagination. Pro porn proponents would argue otherwise, but I cruise the sites once in a while. I see. I read the titles. It's all about sexually repressed people choosing a damaged and damaging medium to 'free' themselves, at the expense of women, while they remain in a kind of sexual bondage. And not the 'good' kind. I think the background does have to do with religion, and religious views of sex, sexuality and women as well as good old misogyny. The 'what about Gay porn' argument doesn't add up, because they are talking about MALE gay porn. Lesbian porn has always been co-opted by heterosexual males. Plus as Twisty says, Gay men are, well, Men.

Someday, I'll find a media of sexual expression that doesn't harm, doesn't exploit, doesn't play on sexual repression, or subjugation of women, rather expresses sexual freedom and the momentous power of sexuality. It will most likely be called erotica (at this point in time) and will be unrecognizable because of the depth and scope of meaning and experience. Yes it will include humor. Yes it will include acts or movements I may personally not choose to do, but it won't be porn.

7. in truth I believe
that porn is ultimately damaging to men, too.

Not the whole abuse and exploitation aspect of it (well, unless one considers getting their money using any means possible could be exploitation!) - but the psychological damage it does. Preventing men from developing NORMAL relationships with women.

Porn perpetuates the lie that women are objects to be USED. This attitude then spills over into everyday life and work and relationships. Women don't have value because of their brains (unless they're 'not pretty'), their only "worth" is what they can do (sexually) for the male.

I posted an article yesterday from Vanity Fair about underage prostitution. I want to just puke eveytime someone talks about "consenting adults" - I refuse to believe that ANYONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND AND ANY SHRED OF SELF-ESTEEM would EVER truly voluntarily CHOOSE to be someone's piece of meat unless they had no other option.

8. It shouldn't be difficult to get but it is, you know?
Edited on Mon May-30-11 11:02 PM by ismnotwasm
Women are so indoctrinated into being the sex class that some consider it a real 'choice', rather than a cultural imperative with extremely negative consequences, if not personally, then to womankind.

Relating back to porn, a certain amount of it involved sperm being visible-on bodies, on faces, whatever. I find that interesting. Men, still the majority of porn purchasers, want to see where the holy water actually is, rather than where it usually goes. To see a face dripping with two or three donors does nothing for me expect make me sad and angry, but evidently there must be quite a number who find it 'sexy'.
