History of the word "feminist"
Hi. I have a history question. I am writing a short fictional story set in the year 1935. One of my characters is talking about feminist women. But I'm not sure if that was the word they would have used back then. I've looked through a few books on history of that decade. But have not found a really good answer. Would a woman have been called a "feminist" in 1935? I've also seen the expression "new" woman for that time period. What did men call woman who were feminist in those days? The good words and the pejoratives. Any light you can shed on this would be a great help.

1. googling "feminist history"...
....the following links came up:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_feminism

http://civilliberty.about.com/od/gendersexuality/tp/History-of-Feminism.htm

http://womenshistory.about.com/od/feminism/Famous_Feminists_and_the_History_of_Feminism.htm

hopefully these contain some of the information you're seeking, as i'm not personally aware what the term was then, of if there was a "label" for women who fought for equality in 1935.

hth. good luck.
