Police talk down alleged rape victim threatening to jump
Sometimes that "alleged" runs like nails down the chalkboard of my back; ANY-way, from the new article;

http://www.komonews.com/news/local/106725788.html

"The woman is an alleged victim in a sexual assault trial and was threatening to commit suicide amidst the trial of the accused rapist, sources tell KOMO News.

The woman had been walking for hours on the roof of the King County Courthouse and a skybridge that links buildings in the courthouse complex, threatening to jump, before she was talked down by negotiators.

The woman is a 21-year-old alleged sexual assault victim in the child rape case of State vs. Salvador Cruz, and she was scheduled to be a witness later in the trial. Sources say the woman is one of several alleged victims in the trial.

The woman's mother had been testifying through most of Thursday morning. The accused rapist, who is the mother’s ex-boyfriend, is acting as his own attorney and was cross-examining the mother.

The 21-year-old became upset as the trial proceeded, sources said. She bolted from the courtroom, went through a door that was left propped open by a maintenance crew and out onto the roof."

Acting as his own attorney. Lovely.

1. It so hurts me that anyone would minimize the impact of rape

and sexual abuse on the victims, when it is observably very great. We see attempts to minimize quite a bit on this website, and they just. kill. me. Every time.

And yeah, the whole "rapist going pro se" bit jumped out at me, too. Pro se is colloquial Latin for "you lose."

2. alleged bothers me, too...
...i get the legality involved in saying someone did something, BEFORE they've had the court day, and all--but it still irritates the hell out of me.

4. I was listening to the radio when this was happening
"We usually don't talk about suicides, but we wanted to let our listeners know what was going on with traffic" Bullshit, well partial bullshit. They wanted to talk about traffic yes, but they also wanted to get that 'rape victim' in there as a salacious little tidbit of news. I was disgusted by the coverage. "Alleged rape victim alleged rape victim alleged rape victim blah blah blah.

Here's a bit of aftermath discussion

http://www.king5.com/news/Defendants-Pro-Se-Rights-vs-The-Accuser-106798139.html

"A bill that would have prevented defendants from directly questioning victims of sexual abuse failed in the legislature this year"

Edited on Sat Nov-06-10 08:00 PM by bliss_eternal
...unless somehow it can be exploited. in this case, to get listeners for a radio show. :eyes:

kinda' o/t....but this makes me think about the backlog of rape kits and the pos wife beater and rape trial your dh served for. i wonder how often such trials select feminists? considering all the times dudes get away w/it....rarely, if ever.

any thoughts on this, anyone?

i was disheartened to do some searching on the issue a while back, and read pro-women, pro-minority, pro-oppression people aren't selected by attorneys, frequently. ;(
