Hating
sarah palin and those who see why....number one thread on DU.

I didn't read the very long list of K and R's. I can't do that anymore.

It's as if people enjoy hating her. Have we ever had such a highly rec'd thread regarding o'reilly or limpballs? Maybe so. Hating these two just doesn't seem to be as much FUN. Just not as much fun to ridicule and humiliate them.

But this has gone on for a few days now, right?

I believe our culture wants us to have FUN hating....especially hating women. Is this the last group that we can hate wide open and in public with such glee and froth?

Does our culture encourage hate, ridicule and humiliation of women? Ask Martha Stewart...jailed on a charge that any other Wall Street dude would never be charged with. Ask Oprah...see the cover of Newsweek last week. Then go to Hollywood...that list goes forever. I don't even know who half of them are...(don't watch TV much).

The glbt group...can't hate them on Letterman. The Blacks...we have a Black Prez now. The Latinos (if framed in illegal immigration) can that be funny?

Muslims...are they funny....funny enough for Letterman to joke about them? Remember the cartoons printed in Holland (or was it Denmark?)

Jews....does Letterman make jokes about one of them getting knocked up?

Pretty soon all these K & Rers will have more important things to worry about...The Economic Decline is ready to jolt anew. But hating women does seem to give the boyz a nice little distraction from their busy, unhappy days.

Wonder how long before this is locked?

And why don't we say 'fatherfucker?' Just asking. Just did a little experiment...when I type in motherfucker, it is NOT underlined as misspelled, but fatherfucker is. Just saying.

1. Can we stop this "last acceptable prejudice" shit?
Racism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, and other forms of oppression are damned prevalent in our society. This kind of thinking also ignores the fact that there are queer women, women of color, trans women, women with disabilities, and the like. Also, it's completely counterproductive.

Can't we just say all oppression should be fought? Can't we say it's all a problem? Can't we work against it all?

The "oppression olympics" don't do anyone any good.

2. Sexism
includes ALL women. Disabled, lesbian, Latinas, etc. If we can't unite as WOMEN and fall prey to the rich, white dude's tactic of 'divide and conquer,' then we lose so much of our power. After all we are 51% of the population, right?

Maybe you misunderstood what I mean by sexism? If you are female, you experience sexism. Some may choose not to recognize it as such, but believe me, it's there.

And no, I for one am not going to stop what you call this 'shit.'

Remember Shirley Chisholm words: 'Men are men.'

I work for the 51%....THE WOMEN. You go work for whomever you want.

Good luck.

3. The thing with political and late night type humor
Is that it goes for easy targets. There are no easier targets then women. It's perfectly acceptable to tell jokes about women in a way that emphasizes their sexuality, or fuckability--the joke is either that they're fuckable, or the joke is that they aren't. The other option is how stupid they are. End of joke

I like humor with irony. I use to memorize Richard Pryor when I was young. I love George Carlin. He did the 'rape can be funny' skit--In a nutshell,(har har) An old lady gets raped. The punchline is "why!?" The entire skit is hilarious, but rape jokes aren't funny and even a master comedian like Carlin fell flat on the actual jokes.

Wanna know why? Well why I think? They don't go far enough. People like their nasty little jokes, but most folks can't tolerated 'The Aristocrats' free for all nothing is sacred humor. Unless you cross everyone's boundaries, cross every line of decency there is, when you attack a vulnerable population, you end up looking like an asshole in one way or the other. Then you get folks thinking being an asshole is an Ok way to be. Once you think being an asshole is Ok, you join the bully's. Ever wonder why the school bully is such a phenomena now? In part, because our culture encourages it. Our mainstream humor is chicken-shit. We pick on the vulnerable. The culturally entrenched, (or institutionalized misogyny)-- stereotypes-as-fact, like the ones about women.

People sling buzz words like 'politically correct' Nobody wants to be politically correct.

Puke. What bullshit. Mean is mean. An asshole is an asshole.

What people pay for is the sense of the other. They pay for the slight discomfort of knowing the joke isn't on them, this time. On the other hand, some Comedians manipulate a masochistic tendency in a crowd (These are the ones I find the most unfunny)baiting and humiliating the audience, but there are the ones in the audience still, who know the joke in not on them--this time.

I say motherfucker all the time. I grew up using it, but it more of a choice now. Both motherfucker and father fucker have an underlying rape connotation, if I think about it.

4. Good analysis....
After eight years of having a bully for a prez, it seems that our nation's attitude/culture/humor is that of a 15 year-old bully. Leaders set the tone.

Hopefully Obama can show Americans how to behave like civilized adults and treat each other with respect.

I grew up using motherfucker as well....but of late I have been questioning my language and applying a more 'fair' or 'equal' way of cursing. Son of a bitch...I say that. I now say son of short dick or just son of a dick. Why should mother always be the one fucked? Why not father as well? At least it may open some minds to our misogynist language.

5. When I've been asked by people if I think SP has been treated in a sexist manner
I say of course she has. I also remind them that back in 2000 there was a candidate who was her equal in every way - arrogant, intellectually incurious, hyper-religious, and filled with unearned hubris. When he flubbed the names of world leaders and just generally didn't know what the fuck he was talking about he was given a pass by the MSM. His name was George W. Bush and he was the white wealthy male heir of a powerful family. So yeah, there was shitload of ugly sexism in 2008 with SP. But there was also a shitload of sexism that allowed an incompetent fuckwit like GWB to ascend to his position. I guess we'll know we've acheived equality when a dumbass woman can get elected POTUS. Then again, mediocre dumbasses who are successful in politics tend to be raging wingnuts so I guess we better hope that a really smart woman like Hillary Clinton can get elected.
