Crosspost: Seriously, why IS it okay with DU for Edwards to appear on/be endorsed by Bill Maher?
This is an OP I started in GD: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x3635190

In all honesty, I'm not that upset at Edwards for getting some exposure on a popular TV show. Even if said show is hosted by a rank misogynist. Even if said rank misogynist is more than interviewing you, he's lionizing you. Whatever. :grr: Politics is a dirty business and you have to use whatever tools are at your disposal. My point in the OP was that it's stupid to equate a candidate with every goofball show biz type s/he may associate with for campaign purposes. I don't think Edwards hates women because Maher does.

But if you contrast the dismissive attitude and lame excuse-making in the comments of my OP with the (absolutely warranted) outrage over Obama and the homophobic gospel singer, it's easy to see that misogyny never goes out of style. :(

1. I added a couple of comments throughout that thread.
I really don't understand the grief you're getting. Though, noting the name of one of the people giving you grief, I have to say I'm not terribly surprised.

2. Thanks ThomCat! You are always there to lend a hand.
People act like it's so absurd to point out that misogyny is just as harmful as homophobia or racism. And notice the hairsplitting about how Edwards going on Maher's show is different because...because...fill in the blank with whatever handy equivocation you choose...

Personally, I think it sucks that Obama's campaign chose a scary homophobe to appeal to African American gospel fans in SC. I think it equally sucks that Hillary Clinton is being endorsed by an equally homophobic minister. And that Edwards is sucking up to an immature he-man-woman-hater like Maher in an attempt to capture the all-important Dude vote.

5. ...and if not clear from my prior post.
It's not ok, at least not to me. :( It's a valid point and I'm glad you brought it up.

...because frankly they sucked. :(

When I saw this post (and responded), I had NO IDEA what this was referring to. I honestly believed your question was a hypothetical one.

I have friends and family near some of the socal fires. The day this was posted, I was very much focused on that. Actually, there wasn't coverage of anything else that day (in my city at least), and I wasn't reading anything in GD other than fire stuff (as I'm also taking another self-imposed GD break.)

I read your linked thread AFTER responding here. Then I read GD and learned of the incident that apparently triggered your question-- AFTER I read your thread. So my prior comments were completely innappropriate once I realized what the hell was going on.

So to attempt to answer your question now, I don't understand why some have such a difficult time allowing others their feelings, whatever they may be. Who am I to tell anyone else what they should or should not be offended by?

(I know this has little to do with point thread link cb. I understand that you were attempting to offer a different perspective on the situation. Sorry to go a bit o/t. I'm commenting more on what I've seen of this and how people are treating each other over it).
