Edited to say I took offense to it elsewhere and got knocked down for it by a poster, not that I did it. Thanks

1. Typical DU "free speech" (anti-woman) rhetoric.
This does not make it right but it does make it the usual on DU.

2. It's offensive.
It's misogyny.

DU is very hostile to women who don't toe the line.

3. actually it was a description of a nasty person
oreilly avatar "whining like a little girl". Yes, he was whining, but the like a little girl got my goat. Got told off by a (supposedly) male poster, guess I have delicate sensibilities. Oh well, thanks. It's annoying.

4. It's still misogyny, regardless of who it was directed at.
It sets the girl as the negative and then compares a man to her in order to deride him.

7. It could be construed as offensive...
Has anyone read the book "Whipping Girl" be Julia Serano? It's fascianting, really. It's about how people try and demonize/delegitimize femininity. A lot of it is making statements like that - statements that imply that femininity is inherently inferior to masculinity.

I find it offensive because I tend to deconstuct and analyze things like that - but I don't think it's something the average person would find offensive, sadly.

8. I think a lot of people do, but wouldn't say anything --
there's huge pressure not to say anything when you are offended in our society, so as not to be labeled in undesirable ways.

But I'm sure a lot of people just don't even hear it.

9. i got a whole thread of mine deleted
Edited on Sat Sep-29-07 11:00 AM by musette_sf
in the so-called "Women's Rights" group (ha!) where a man called me "childish, immature and irrational" for daring to speak out on men causing a thread about their precious porn to get locked (a repost of an recent article from Alternet) before women had a chance to weigh in on it, due to their male privilege BS ranting.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=229&topic_id=8031&mesg_id=8031

meanwhile the men's offensive posts in the thread remain there, while my thread "thanking" them for getting the thread shut down before WOMEN could comment in the WOMEN'S RIGHTS group, and its accompanying posts, were deleted.

i guess the rules about "calling out" other members don't apply to some in DU.

and i learned not to post in the Women's Rights group any more unless i want a raft of male privilege BS dumped on me, and mods locking and deleting my threads. as lwfern so appropriately called it, "it's a place to debate whether we should have them, or whether the right to exploit and degrade women trumps that."

10. "Stop whining like a boy."

Ever heard that? Neither have I. That's my test for the offensiveness.
