Any other (frustrated) FTM2008 users here?
Were you one of those desperate users (like me) who leaped at the chance to download the free 2009 update and crashed their server? LOL!

Actually, I guess the Maker makers deserve some form of kudos for recognizing that 2008 had good intentions but was nevertheless a cumbersome train wreck that made 2006 that much more attractive (limitations and all).

1. I'm using 16.
Got a copy from a fabulous DUer who suggested I update my ancient copy of 6 from 1999! :D

Good to know so I won't pick up this update!

3. Funny, I'm still on FTM 6, too.
There were a few questionable upgrades that I skipped. Decided to try something else. Master Genealogist. I love FTM's interface much better, but Master Genealogist - compared with the products available at the time - was much more flexible in what kinds of records and sources I could track.

I keep watching for a reason to upgrade FTM 6 but haven't seen a good one yet.

4. I used FTM for years but then switched to TMG - never go back
I started with FTM 2.0 and did upgrade each time. Last upgrade was 2006 so you can see I really did believe in the program. Then a good friend convinced me to try TMG. I have been using it for 2 yrs now and would NEVER go back to FTM. I will admit that when I switched there was clean up on the files. Little by little I got everything entered the correct way. All those notes and facts that you enter in separate screens in FTM are all part of the individuals page. So no need to go and look for that info. I also have custom screen layouts, for example: when I am working with census info. I can enter all the info for the entire family in one memo field and link all those listed without copying to each person separately. And most importantly I have really learned the proper way to source the information I put down.

The major complaint is - a big learning curve. I will admit it took me a bit to really understand sourcing but having it done correctly is so important to genealogy. Entering the data is just like any other program.

I noticed the new FTM 2009 is trying to look more and more like TMG But I don't believe they will ever be able to really duplicate what TMG has done.

2. I used FTM 2008 for about 2 months
then uninstalled it. I went back to FTM 2006.

5. I have FTM 8 installed on my old desktop
and yes, it IS a dog! :puke:

I'm using FTM 16 on my new laptop here. I strongly prefer this version to FTM 8. I don't think I want to even know what "9" is like.

It angers me as after awhile, old versions of FTM don't work anymore I've noticed. You are forced to upgrade, like it or not.

*sigh*

6. Because my 2006 ftw file keeps crashing, I'm resorting to 2009...
ehh...I'm KINDA getting the hang of it; I think if you've NEVER used 2006 and you're starting fresh, it's pretty good.
