Hey, could somebody do me a favor? Ancestry.com wise?

The membership that my cousin paid for just lapsed back in May, and I'm going crazy not having some of this stuff. But reprehensor is still not working, so it's not feasible to get it yet. The library is on the other side of town, and the ones that aren't are in kind of a crappy neighborhood.

I need to see if someone could do a couple of census lookups (1900, 1910, 1920) for me, for a clump of family I just found:

The couple was Jefferson Davis Frye and his wife Clara, married about 1898. He was supposedly born in TN c. 1863, father NC, mother TN. Clara was born in OH c. 1871, father OH and mother NY.

They had several children, I think:
- Earl
- Harry
- Marion
- Ray
- Clarence Herbert
- James Warren
- Theodore Roosevelt

They could appear anywhere around the Midwest, I'm thinking. Supposedly Jefferson was an itinerant Baptist minister, and I know that at certain points they lived in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, and Kansas. This information was all found on someone's rootsweb tree after putting 2 and 2 together on a hunch. Now, I've gotta start filling in the gaps and documenting. I need more information to start with!

Also, if any of the above guys have WWI draft cards, that would help a lot too. If you could save the copies and send them to me in an e-mail, I can send you my e-mail address.

1. I'm seeing him in Kentucky in 1900.

It's Covington, in Kenton County, and I see a listing for Jefferson Davis Frye, born in Tennessee to parents born in Georgia, with a wife whose name I can't quite make out. The kids are Mary and Theodore.

He's listed as age 37, born in 1862 (I think the month is June).

I'm absolute crap at technical things, but since I have access to Heritage Quest through my local library, I can do the Census look-ups for you. And I need to learn how to reproduce the digital images and convey them to you.

2. Okay, I've commenced ripping out my hair.

I started poking around the other years and find that the birth states are not matching up. Aargh! So far Mr. 1900 looks like the best match -- kids' names, birthplace of the head of the household, etc.

I've also tried using alternate spellings.

Anyway, must get some rest here and will return to task when there's some time.

I used to have HeritageQuest through the Godfrey Library in Connecticut, but then Heritage made themselves only avaiilable through libraries or something.

In Ancestry, you have an automatic Save option up in the right corner, and usually I just save the images straight to my hard drive so I have them in the future. And it's amazing what you can do with a right-click! :D

But figures...since the membership expired, I've been finding tons of them that I forgot to download! Aiyeeee! So as soon as we can get reprehensor employed (it ain't much, but he has a coffeehouse interview today), I'm renewing my subscription!

Whatever you can find is great. :D

4. And from what I can tell...

They may be different every time, since he traveled for the profession. And keep in mind that someone different was probably providing the info each time, so the birthplaces may NOT match.

His name might also show up as Jay D., J.D, or some variant thereof. I found a different set of info at the LDS database that matched, and they had him listed that way.

5. I also thought about looking up Jeff.

I'm at work now and therefore won't be downloading anything, but when I get back home tonight, I see about sending HeritageQuest files.

Anyway, about Jefferson Davis Frye: I see listings conforming to that spelling for several years and in several states. Again, as I said above, the closest match was the 1900 entry, as it confirmed the Tennessee birthplace and also two of the children's names.

I also tried the Fry spelling.

And on top of this, we have to consider goofball transcription due to the illegible handwriting. As I've noted before, my great-grandfather Stephen Babis appears as Stone in the HeritageQuest database. :rofl: I guess the Census taker wrote Steve and when the time the Works Progress Administration compiler or someone else got hold of the record, he or she wrote Stone.

FWIW, it looks like his father spelled it Frey, and he changed the spelling, so I was going to hit every possible, with and without e's everywhere.

I finally found my Isaac Baldwin listed the year he was missing as "J.B." It had been I, but mistranscribed.

11. I looked up the 1910 entry for Dauphin, Pennsylvania.

The copy on HeritageQuest is so bad that it's virtually impossible to read the entries, even with enlargement.

I've been poking around looking for various Fryes, Freys, and Frys (Fries? :shrug:). Suggestions cheerfully solicited.

I've been in hiding for about a year. Toooo much to go into. Had to give up DU because I didn't have the time.
But I'm back. There, you all have fair warning. LOL.

So, I couldn't sleep last night and saw your post. Did some half-awake hunting on Ancestry.com but couldn't find anything that fit. Do you have birth years on ANY of the kids? Even one? I'm WIDE awake now and I'm working on some hardware/software stuff for my computer. And once I'm done, I'll go play on Ancestry some more. If you have anything else to help, even a wild guess or two, let me know and I'll see what I can find. :)

Was very sad when you took off...I have found a bit more info on some of the kids (see the black sheep thread I posted too!). One of the guys died right near here, so I have a query with one of the state line libraries to see if they have local newspapers. I may go hunting there this weekend rather than Madison.

I'll let you know when I get home if there are any years for any of these.

14. Well, I made a little progress..

I FINALLY figured out how to get into HeritageQuest from home! Milwaukee won't let you do it, but neighboring Wauwatosa WILL, if you have a Milwaukee County library card. :D

You guys were right. This family must have had a phobia of census takers! I found em in Georgia in 1900.

And I think the first two kids, Earl and Ray, must have been his first wife's. They were in a Militia District in Catoosa County. Harder to find because they were split between 2 pages. JD was at the very bottom of one page, and Clara was at the top of one.

Other than that, not having as much luck as I'd hoped! but I'm determined.

Being able to do look-ups from your home PC does make a huge difference, doesn't it, especially when you need to look up alternative spellings.

And I can empathize with your experience of Vanishing Relative Syndrome. Whole chunks of my family disappear and reappear from one year to another, with my great-great-grandfather showing up in the 1870 Census, MIA in 1880, and living just long enough to be counted for the 1900 Census.
