Countdown Newsletter: 08/01/06 -- War, Protests and Anti-Semitism
------------------------------------------------------
Tonight on Countdown
------------------------------------------------------

Mel Gibson said Tuesday that he is not a bigot or an anti-Semite and that he apologizes to “everyone in the Jewish community for the vitriolic and harmful words” he used when he was arrested for drunken driving “Hatred of any kind goes against my faith,” he said in a statement, “I’m not just asking for forgiveness,” Gibson said. “I would like to take it one step further, and meet with leaders in the Jewish community, with whom I can have a one-on-one discussion to discern the appropriate path for healing.” http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14135464/

As the conflict in the Middle East continues, there are protests of conscience, but also instances where anti-Semitism is boiling over. Protesters took to the streets in several Arab cities Monday in response to Israeli attacks on Lebanon as Egypt's president warned that the Middle East peace process was in danger of collapsing. "Egypt, which triggered the peace process, warns of the consequences of its collapse," said President Hosni Mubarak whose country was the first Arab state to sign a peace treaty with Israel. "The Israeli aggression undermines the opportunities to continue it."

Heavy fighting raged Tuesday in the Lebanese border village of Aita al-Shaab, and Hezbollah television said 35 Israeli soldiers had been killed or wounded in the fighting. Israeli warplanes pounded Shiite Lebanese villages in many areas along the border and struck Hezbollah strongholds deep inside the country. Three weeks after the war erupted when Hezbollah snatched two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid, Israel’s security cabinet agreed to step up its offensive. But Israeli forces met fierce resistance from Hezbollah guerrillas who reportedly killed three soldiers. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14128276/

Bombings and shootings across Iraq killed at least 52 people Tuesday, including 24 people in a bus destroyed by a roadside bomb. The attacks further damage the U.S.-backed government’s efforts to establish control over the country. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14128398/

Fidel Castro, who has wielded absolute power in Cuba for nearly half a century, remained out of sight Tuesday after undergoing intestinal surgery and temporarily turning over power to his brother Raul. The surprise announcement that Castro had been operated on to repair a “sharp intestinal crisis with sustained bleeding” stunned Cubans on the island and in exile, and marked the first time that Castro, two weeks away from 80th birthday, had relinquished power in 47 years of rule. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14131285/

Every self-respecting trivia junkie knows that the Buggles’ “Video Killed the Radio Star” was the first MTV video to air. Less well remembered is the fact that hardly anyone saw it: The network began broadcasting Aug. 1, 1981, 25 years ago, to a tiny sampling of homes in New Jersey, at a time when few neighborhoods were yet wired for cable. Twenty-five years! If that doesn’t make you feel old, well, then you’re still using a sippy cup. Adults of all ages recognize MTV as the network that was going to do away with pop nostalgia by staying relentlessly on top of the very latest developments in music and the broader culture. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14121701/

And Mel Gibson Driving School Puppet Theater.

That's some of what we're planning for tonight's show.

Finally,
NEWPORT, Ark -- A preacher's wife was arrested after police say she pulled a gun on her husband because she allegedly was upset over text messages he had sent to a member of a church youth group. Tammy Estes surrendered to law officers at the Pentecostal Church of God in Newport after a brief standoff at the church Sunday evening. No one was injured. Police say a church service had just begun when Estes pulled a gun on her husband, preacher Larry Estes, about 7 p.m. According to congregation members, she was upset over messages Larry Estes allegedly exchanged with a youth group member and she demanded he admit infidelity. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060801/ap_on_fe_st/preacher_s_wife;_ylt=AgyW1cv.Rn9IUaBqku2Uv2Ks0NUE;_ylu=X3oDMTA3NW1oMDRpBHNlYwM3NTc-
Either she's really paranoid or that was one helluva text message.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Tuesday rejected a U.N. Security Council resolution that would give his nation until Aug. 31 to suspend uranium enrichment. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12342825/

Consumer spending was weak for a fourth straight month in June as rising gasoline prices left Americans with little to spend on other items. Construction activity posted a stronger-than-expected advance, though, as a record level of government spending helped offset weakness in housing. Inflation measure rose at fastest pace in decade. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14133538/

The famed necklace lights lining New York's East River bridges will remain off to save power as the city braces for potentially record breaking heat — one of many conservation tactics across the country during soaring temperatures from the Midwest to the Northeast. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14132266/

In what could become a new weapon in the battle of the bulge, scientists on Monday reported initial success with an experimental vaccine for obesity. The researchers found that when they gave rats a vaccine against a “hunger hormone” called ghrelin, the animals were able to live the dream of eating what they wanted without packing on body fat. Secreted primarily by the stomach, ghrelin is one of the hormones that help regulate appetite, metabolism and weight. Ghrelin levels rise before a meal, putting the brakes on calorie burning and fat breakdown, then decline after a person eats. The hormone promotes weight gain and fat storage. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14134156/

1. So, I guess Gibson still thinks it's okay
to refer to a woman in a position of authority as "Sugar Tits." Oh the crap I could bore you with about the Latin Rite Catholic loons!

Sorry, Mel, but if you weren't thinking those things & holding those ideas, you never would have said them.

2. Maybe next he will ask NOW to help him overcome his sexism.
Jeez, so now the Jews are supposed to help Mel dry out? I guess if it doesn't work, that'll be yet another thing they can be blamed collectively for...failing to reform Mel...oy vey.
