Darryl Strawberry: STAR-CROSSED
Interview with Stephen Palgon and Todd Pellegrino
An ESPN Documentary
First broadcast 2-22-2002
*
The Shakespearean Tragedy of Darryl Strawberry & Dwight Gooden
*
This 85-minute feature length, uniquely styled documentary takes you through the lives of Darryl Strawberry and Dwight Gooden by crossing their stories with those from Shakespeare. The character study features applicable readings from the playwright's works intertwined with comments from sports journalists, including *Keith Olbermann,* Len Berman and the late Dick Schaap.

Topics covered include Gooden's and Strawberry's difficult childhoods in Tampa and Los Angeles, respectively; their meteoric rise and fall with the Mets in the 1980s; their battles with drug addiction and legal troubles; and their resurfacing in the Big Apple as Yankees in the mid-1990s. The film credits this website for the Darryl Strawberry collection featured within it. The film was cut to 46 minutes to run on an hour segment on ESPN in February, 2002. ...

PS - I'm glad to see others discussing Michael Freeman's ESPN book ("The Uncensored History"). Forget the "tortured genius" aspect, which has been disproportionately emphasized. Sexual harrassment at ESPN is the book's central issue.

Freeman talks a lot about Keith's battles with management, it is true; but when the smoke clears, our man ultimately emerges as a FEMINIST ICON, taking up forcefully -- and outspokenly -- for the rights of women at the network who were suffering every kind of sexist oppression known to broadcasting.

While Keith's sidekick Dan Patrick, as is his wont, supported them quietly behind the scenes, Keith championed the women's cause exactly the way we'd expect him to, and IMO has earned himself a place in ANY pantheon of important fighters for women's safety and equality in the workplace!

If I had no additional reason to admire him (and goodness knows there are so many others!), all that Keith risked on behalf of women at ESPN would, by itself, win him enduring place in my heart.

Read Olberman & Patrick's "The Big Show" for entertainment; read Freeman's "ESPN: the Uncensored History" for the writing, which is excellent, and especially for the insights it yields concerning the character of the man to whom this Clubhouse is dedicated.

1. Meh. I don't get ESPN Classic.
Any way that we could sweet-talk someone into Tivo'ing it for us and posting somewhere? Or, the old fashioned way, if someone wouldn't mind *taping* it and then we could just sort of MAIL it around to each other. Old-school, but it works. :7

2. There MUST be a way. I don't have the equipment/knowhow, but I know ...
. . . someone here does.

Someone who LOVES us.

Oh, DZIKA, darling...!

3. bleeurgh. This show sounds godawful, but I do allegedly get
ESPN Classic (I say "allegedly" because our TV spends an inordinate amount of time showing VeggieTales vidoes and the like). I'll check the local listings and set up a tape for Saturday. Strawberry as star-crossed. I think I'm gonna :puke:.

. . . KO in SHORTS. http://olbermann.org/ko/photo_detail.cfm?photos_id=232

:loveya:

(Plus I'm trying to supplement my meager knowledge of sports, and a sports doc with Keith in it sounds like an easy way to do that!)

awfulness just to confirm that KO indeed has kneecaps, but on your own head be it. I'll buy a fresh tape so you won't suddenly get jarred from Keef worship into an old episode of "Blue's Clues". ;-)

5. Excellent!
:yourock: Next you have to WATCH it and tell us if it's worth mailing around the country.

I don't think we could convince dzika to vid an entire 85 minutes worth, the more I think about it. That's a LOTTA hard drive space on some server somewhere....

7. Well, if Keith can do highlights, why couldn't . . .
. . . dzika? (I was tempted to use a phrase like "prime cuts" -- but after that disquisition on
sexism farther down the thread, it sounded kinda inappropriate! :spank:)

Maybe dzika could edit the hour down to just the "highlights" for us --? At his convenience, I mean.

9. I wouldn't want Dzika to do something that could easily get him
into a lot of trouble. A quick screen capture is one thing. Even the occasional 30-second clip is probably not going to be a problem. But "highlights" would be an egregious enough of a copyright violation to possible bring legal action down on his head. Just not worth it.

13. other people have "known" what they could "safely" do
right up until they got sued for it. Putting copies of stuff out on the 'net draws a lot of notice simply because the number of copies is theoretically infinite -- it's a worst-case scenario. The market value of a brief clip from an ephemeral news program is probably not worth the effort so dzika is probably safe, but let's not kid ourselves -- if MSNBC or GE wanted to go after him, they could. I'm sure as hell not going to encourage him to take clips from some other program which might be perceived to have greater marketability, in terms of being something that can be aired multiple times over a period of years.

How come nobody wants to talk about KO, the feminist hero? I've tried to draw attention to this major aspect of the ESPN book in the past and didn't get any takers then, either.

Aren't there any FEMINISTS in the KOEB???

(Please note, w/ regard to posting a clip, I said I wuz cool w/ what everyone else wanted to do. Sheesh! x()

30. Other things have been happening to people in an already somber atmosphere
. . . recently, Shop.

You weren't here, but even so ... any normal person would understand -- without being told -- that people have tough times, which could be made tougher by the constant media barrage of death-centered material to which we were subjected over the past couple weeks.

The absence of "Countdown" deprived people of *ONE* opportunity to laugh -- in our case, to laugh together -- and also caused a break in what might otherwise been a comforting routine.

So you see, your unbroken stream of sarcasm and hyperbole doesn't make you look smarter than we are, Shop; it might create the impression, however, that you're slightly outside the normal psychological loop.

To Rev: NOW I'll drop it.

37. If you feel you are being personally attacked, hit the alert.
The moderators are the ones who decide. Not me, not you, but the mods.

Obviously, you and WG disagree about something that happened on another board. Please keep those disagreements over there, and do not bring them over here. If someone posts something I don't want to read, then I either ignore it, or click "hide thread."

But when the disagreement became personal and moves over here, it has crossed an unacceptable boundary, IMO.

I am not going to get involved in either "side." I simply call them as I see them, and I think it's time to let this situation go. It is only turning into a flame-war. Keith is where we go, as a group, to avoid flame-wars.
