That ought to be interesting!

Tweety looks a bit tired or sad. His voice is not nearly as loud and obnoxious as it usually is.

10. Hi, seito. Yes, Chris does look more subdued - but he said he did a lot of
. . . taking stock on the plane on the way over. About the religious things he's always believed and the prayers he always said. The pope's death was making him take a fresh look at all of that.

I wish Matthews would take a fresh look at a lot of things, frankly; but it was interesting to hear about, because this was all in response to one of Keith's penetrating questions.

Keith interviews Tweety -- boy, how often does THAT happen, that one anchor probes another's thinking?

I agree, it would be very nice if Matthews did a long, hard introspection. He might find a decent, humble individual down deep inside.

Nice to see you all tonight, and my condolences go out to everyone that is mourning the Pope's passing. :hug:

2. It was starting to get embarrassing last night . . .
. . . they kept doing shorter and shorter segments because there was nothing new to report, and every time they came back from the commercial break you heard that same somber music -- which seemed appropriate enough when everyone thought an announcement was imminent, but which actually began to sound humorous (at least to me) as it began to look more and more like his holiness wasn't going to cooperate w/ the networks' schedule and die, after all!

Nevertheless, the folks in the control room insisted on carrying the lugubrious theme music into the first 30-to-60 seconds of each segment, and Keith was running out of ways to make the "updates" ("for those of you just joining us. . .") sound interesting. With a mind as nimble as his, I was wondering if he had noticed how much the chords of that somber little "bumper" song resembled those of "The House of the Rising Sun," and was perhaps singing it in his head for some diversion! -- or maybe it was just me, OD'ing on pope death vigil coverage. . .

18. WhirlyGirl and the Viking Funeral on Gull Bay?
It was a grey sky as the EDVs loaded W.G.'s body on the sail boat moored to
the dock where the Crimson river spills into Gull Bay. Although many years had
past the EDVs, Sparky, & Bleever still knew how to pitch a party. Some in the
crowd where upset @ the way Patsy was enforcing the no drinking law until WhirlyGirl's boat was lit and sailed off to Valhalla. She had a smile on her face and flowers in her hair as the boat was pushed out into the retreating tide.

Keith, strode to the microphone and said ........ "She was a .................."

Go ahead fill in the blank EDVs.

LOL!

this afternoon.

I grew up catholic, spent 10 yrs in catholic girls' schools but left the church when I graduated from high school. I've been away from it for longer than John Paul II has been the pope. I never felt particularly connected to JP II, but I've shed lots of tears last night and today - largely because of the way in which KO talks about him!

KO has an amazing gift of eloquence and respect

20. Not much activity here tonight --
-- did we all wear ourselves out last night?

Btw, Tweety isn't being very generous tonight. Even in the segments where they briefly go back to the studio and Keith is talking to Matthews, Chris can't stop stepping on KO's responses to what he's saying.

I know there's a little bit of a lag that can mess you up when you're communicating from a remote location, but Chris never seems to take that into account.

Keith hasn't had this problem with anyone in Rome or anybody else outside the studio that he's been talking to. Just Tweety.

Bad Tweety -> :spank:

25. OMG! TV Newser actually praises Keith for his Pope coverage!
Pope: MSNBC's Smart, Thoughtful Coverage
MSNBC won't net the biggest ratings during their coverage of the Pope's death, but that doesn't mean their product isn't deserving of praise. Keith Olbermann's thoughtful, original packages have spurred several e-mailers to suggest he's at his prime on this story. "I'm surprised NBC isn't using him in their coverage," an insider wrote this afternoon. MSNBC's efforts to make "smart TV" are visible and audible on my set today.

Meanwhile, I've received several e-mails from readers wondering why Chris Matthews is heading up MSNBC's coverage from Rome: "What is a political pundit doing in Rome?," one person asked. "He appears to be way out of his element." MSNBC sent Matthews to cover the death of a world leader -- and one who was very much political at times. Additionally, Matthews is Catholic, and "knows the church inside and out," an insider says...

> "It's not Hardball tonight, Cardinal, so I'd love your feelings," Matthews said to one guest at 7:30pm.

> "Usually I'm a huge CNN watcher and usually won't switch channels, but today I find myself watching MSNBC. Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann are fantastic. Chris is asking really interesting questions of their guests (in his usual blunt style) and Keith is extremely eloquent," an e-mailer says.

http://mediabistro.com/tvnewser/

I saw that they had up Keith's tribute last night - what a work of art. I've emailed them to see if they can get the text of Keith's Pope obit from tonight. I was sweeping the floor and only half paying attention when I heard it. Yet, I was still so moved I sat on the floor and cried. It was just beautiful.

I don't presume to speak on their behalf. Let's just say that they are probably the most open-minded of believers. Some claim they are also Christian, others do not. The focus is on God (not Jesus), yet the teachings of Christ are important.

I have nothing but the greatest respect for UU's.

46. Not a bad list of principles to live by
We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote

The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
Justice, equity and compassion in human relations;
Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;
A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;
The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;
Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

Thanks CC and Cheese for the info

Of course, he could be raised Unitarian and converted to Catholism for who-knows-what reason, so it's not out of the realm.

And you know what? I don't know! I assumed Catholic because he's so fluent in the language of the faith but I've never read a single interview where he said or heard him say anything before tonight. But I heard what y'all heard about being "raised" Unitarian. So I guess we know at least that much-he was brought up in the Unitarian faith! 55. My brother converted . . .
. . . when he married a Catholic, so I have a sense of what's going on there, too. I've always been interested in what other people believe.

My husband is a Methodist (Hey, Rev!), but we traveled to my childhood church to get married. Our beliefs differ slightly, but it hasn't created a problem.

Might have to move to the laptop if they get closer. But I hate not having a split keyboard. Good idea though.

91. Thank you! I agree, an optical zoom is a must
I still get by fine with my little 4-yr-old 1.4 megapixel Olympus optical zoom with the clamshell closure. Excellent optics and takes wonderful macro pictures too. Good in low light conditions so I rarely use the flash, just take extra shots and chose one that isn't blurred. I's small enough that it's no trouble to bring along in case there are shots I want to take unexpectedly, but big enough to have an excellent lens. I can make good 5x7 prints and occasionally good 8,10 prints, which so far is all I have needed. Most of my use is for using and sharing on the computer (at 72 dpi, don't need much resolution) and for printing photo references for paintings.

But sometime in the next year I'll probably want to take the leap to another camera, and I'll save these notes for then.

Thanks again!
:hug:

65. Hi Cheese - I'm less sad than last night. And did you get the quote
Edited on Sat Apr-02-05 10:07 PM by Nothing Without Hope
I posted for you in last night's thread? It's from Tecumseh:

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life, beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. Prepare a noble death song for the day when you go over the great divide. Always give a word or sign of salute when meeting or passing a friend, or even a stranger, if in a lonely place. Show respect to all people, but grovel to none. When you rise in the morning, give thanks for the light, for your life, for your strength. Give thanks for your food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason to give thanks, the fault lies in yourself. Abuse no one and no thing, for abuse turns the wise ones to fools and robs the spirit of its vision. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

You said something about looking for thoughtful comments on death, and this is one of my own favorites.

I hope you'll also check out what I just posted in the "GOOD NEWS THREAD" in the clubhouse - it's about a 30-year-old place called "Gaviotas." If anything is really a miracle of the human spirit and openness to the possible, then this place and its people are IT. I strongly recommend you get a copy of the lilttle book on this place on the Columbian llanos - "Gaviotas: A village to reinvent the world," by Alan Weisman. Used ones are 10 bucks at Amazon, and you won't regret it for a minute. I've left a trail of them behind me as I've given or loaned (often the same thing) them to friends and acquantances.

68. Hey Rev.
I'm very sad.
As a lapsed Catholic, I didn't think the Pope's passing would hit me as hard as it has, but I have been very emotional today.
I think, for the first time, I feel the world is without a true moral rudder. All we have are the neo-cons and their false religiosity at the gates and we will all suffer as a result.
Very melancholy and lonely here, Rev.
I hope you're doing better.

75. It is a sad time.
:hug: to you, Clark.

The papacy really is a world leader in morality, isn't it? That's a good way to look at it. I would also guess that it feels especially empty, considering our lot with the blivet.

These are moments when we must rely on our faith in God. I know there's a lot of fear in a time of transition, not knowing who will ascend the see. This tension is natural, and is also a part of grieving. I find it helpful to remember challenging moments from the past, and how you somehow managed to survive, and even grow from those times of trial.

I'm in a quiet, but good place. I spent the afternoon at the Lake, walking along the beach. I'm a mile away, yet I don't get there very often (that's going to change). This is, by far, one of the best things I have done in a long time. Fortunately, most of the snow was gone, and it was about 50 degrees today. Around here, that's pretty warm for this time of year.

89. Ok he has made so many references
to it, I think it is time for the whole Dylan Thomas poem.

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Spring is on its way and so figure I'll post a last snow picture. (Sides if this rain were snow thinking it would look like this only deeper) To me the mood of the pic fits the day somehow.

Hope you all have a goodnight. Hang in there and never give up on hope. There is always a light in the darkness.
