KOEB 9/12/05
It's "What Went Wrong?" night on MSNBC, and our next batter is...KEITH OLBERMANN!!!!

Ready to take a swing at incompetent bureaucrats everywhere...including the latest pitcher put into the game when Michael "Brownie" Brown, in the middle of resounding boos, walked off the pitcher's mound in the middle of a terrible situation...the latest denizen of the Bush "Bull" Pen, David "Duct Tape Man" Paulison!

Batter up, Keith!!!!

91. Oh, I know, is there anyone that even likes the screen crawl? Who decided
we needed that much sensory overload in the first place. Was it Faux that first started using it, or CNN, and who as MSNBC decided they'd be brilliant and emulate anything seen on Fox?

But just as I feared, it stayed.
Before that, CNN headline news used it. Again, it made sense, if you needed to get your news in a hurry.

We, the suffering viewers of Countdown, demand the MSNBC screen crawl be abolished. It is an insufferable intrusion which adds nothing to the pleasure of watching KO's snarky take on the news.

126. Interesting that they had 19 writers in on that one story for Newsweek.
I guess they don't think the magazine wants to fire every single one of them, so there is safety in numbers. Either that or all 19 of them were anxious to get a chance to take a swing at the man who has dissed the press and used and abused them so badly for five years (of course they could've put up a fight but they just rolled over for it, causing lots of damage with their enabling).

But let's not forget, the poppies didn't put everyone to sleep in the first place. The Scarecrow and the Tin Man were unaffected by them. Only Dorothy and the Cowardly Lion were vulnerable.

I like to think of Keith as our Tin Man...because he's sturdy and, whether he realizes it or not, he's ALWAYS had a heart! (not to mention brains and courage!)

48. It's something we started calling * a long time ago
It has several definitions, all of which fit him perfectly.

Definition: /bliv'*t/ 1. An intractable problem.

2. A crucial piece of hardware that can't be fixed or replaced if it breaks.

3. A tool that has been hacked over by so many incompetent programmers that it has become an unmaintainable tissue of hacks.

4. An out-of-control but unkillable development effort.

5. An embarrassing bug that pops up during a customer demo.

6. In the subjargon of computer security specialists, a denial-of-service attack performed by hogging limited resources that have no access controls (for example, shared spool space on a multi-user system).

This term has other meanings in other technical cultures; among experimental physicists and hardware engineers of various kinds it seems to mean any random object of unknown purpose (similar to hackish use of frob). It has also been used to describe an amusing trick-the-eye drawing resembling a three-pronged fork that appears to depict a three-dimensional object until one realises that the parts fit together in an impossible way.

I think my favorite explanations are:

4. An out-of-control but unkillable development effort.

5. An embarrassing bug that pops up during a customer demo.

I think an embarrassing bug aptly describes Shrub.

"If the lake should overflow,
You know Bush has got to go"

"FEMA cannot stop water's courses
With a man who only knows about horses"

"There was too much in Pontchartrain
And far too little in the president's brain"

"Eating cake and gee-tar strummin'
Won't stop a killer flood from comin'"

"If he does nothing when floods rise high,
The Chimp has got to say goodbye"

171. I don't think he can wait this one out.
some of the press may come to heel, but Andersoon Cooper won't. Brian Williams won't. I don't think the idea of mercenaries in New Orleans will sit well with a lot of Americans, who are going to wonder where the Guard is and we know the answer to that one.

As things calm down a bit in New Orleans, it only gives the broadcasters more time to focus on how bad things still are in Mississippi, and that's not going to help. It will remind Americans that it's not just about a bunch of poor black people in New Orleans (for the rednecks who think the dispossessed are a bunch of welfare layabouts) and that it's just not about the levee breach. The response on the ground in Mississippi is also not acceptable; it's just not so concentratedly dramatic.

And God help us all if a tropical storm wanders through that area, as could so easily happen. They don't even have to originate off the coast of Africa; sometimes they just pop up in the Gulf and drop a bunch of rain and catch people by surprise because you don't get the long lead time you have with hurricanes. There's a reason why a lot of people living along the Gulf Coast try to catch the weather nearly every day during hurricane season. Houston's worst flooding has come not from hurricanes, but from slow-moving tropical storms that passed over the city multiple times. I'm not thinking just of Allison, but another one back in 1979 or 1980 over Labor Day weekend that caused a lot of street flooding.

190. A lot of hurricane damage happens afterwards
after Hurricane Emily came ashore, tourists along the coast thought it was no big deal, but here 180 miles inland, we got a lot of rain & wind....one of my trees got knocked down & also a power line (wanna meet some cute guys quick? call the power company & say "I've got a downed power line in my back yard" five minutes later, YOWZA, chez DG crawling with cute guys in company trucks)

Other storms that had damage occurring after they came ashore: Allen, Celia, Beulah

Hurricane Celia & its aftermath make for interesting study since it didn't act like it was "supposed" to & even intensified before it came ashore, so if hurricanes are your "thing," start with that one.

Being busy is helping me try and move past the fury I'm feeling over this bumbling criminal we've got in the WH. I did finally hear from my friend in NO, she said she was OK but didn't know where they would go or what they would do. Just about broke my heart. I offered for her to go to my cottage in Florida but she is uneasy about being in another coastal community. Can't say that I blame her. We just missed being hit head on last year by Charlee. My best friends's Dad is right on the ocean on the Outer Banks, NC, I sure hope Ophelia deals kindly with those folks.

119. It amused me to listen each time to how careful Keith was
each and every time he said "duct tape" to enunciate and pronounce each word, rather than slur it.

I can just imagine him in the makeup-room mirror at MSNBC before tonight's show...staring into it and repeating over and over again, "Duct. Tape. Duct. Tape. DUCT. TAPE..."

181. well, my husband was 38 when we got married
and he's definitely straight , but yeah, I think Robert is probably in the closet, too. Not that I would care if he didn't seem so unsettling in other ways. He's one of those people who never seems to blink, and I don't take that as a good sign. His reactions to what's going on around him seem a bit flat and artificial, which really sets off an alarm in my head.

Miracle, I mean--not Rita.

Nice to have a positive story on.

I think Keith is slowly, slowly working his way back toward laughs and snark. He's already taken his snarks where he can get them (and he made about a million duct tape jokes tonight). Maybe in a week or so we'll feel as if it is safe to really have a laugh again. I don't know, maybe even sooner. But there's just so much to absorb.

182. good question
she looks great in the before photo. I didn't study her in the detail Crispy did tonight, but you know what I thought of? Mug shots for women picked up on solicitation charges. Seriously. With the overprocessed hair and the washed-out makeup. Granted, she's been moving around a lot in the past few weeks, so her sleep schedule is probably totally fucked up, which could account for part of the haggard appearance, but still...

But that hair is a horror. Nothing to do with NO, I mean that the color is all wrong. And now she's wearing a lighter lip gloss, which adds to the problem. Together they're a bit tarty.

114. Maybe it's the fact that she's not all dressed up in the studio now
and she's "slumming it" with casual clothes and hair. The artificiality of her face shows up more when she's in casual dress than when she's all dolled up in the studio. There, you expect to see a Stepford Newscaster Wife. On the ground in NO, you expect to see someone who really looks more casual. But it's not as if she can put on her normal face again.

In case anyone wants to know the REAL use of ducT Tape (as Keith calls it) or, as this company calls it, Duck Tape...

http://www.ducktapeclub.com/contests/prom/entries.asp

THIS is what you really do with it. Get your high schooler to make his or her own prom outfit from it, and win scholarship money for college.

You can go contemporary, Scottish, Elizabethan, Gay '90s (or just gay)...anything you want.
