Sweet! KO in for a second hour on DP today.
I don't get half of what they're talking about, but I'm sort of broadening my horizons I guess. :P

6. It's baseball at the moment.

Origins of the "yankees" name.

Earlier Dan was telling some story about a b'ball player who whacked the crap out of his manager's door with a bat and KO was 'psychoanalyzing' his joy in the story -- kinda funny.

lots of b'ball speculation I can't even follow. it's a whole 'nother world. :P

8. more than kinda funny
and they had someone on hold while they were doing that and Dan was telling a story about one Easter when he was a kid and all he got in his Easter basket was uncolored hard-boiled eggs and a handful of jellybeans so he threw the eggs against a door (apparently the door-whacking brought that childhood memory back to him) and later KO told a story about an executive at work who wears the same cologne that KO's dad used when KO was a teenager. This man also smokes cigars, as KO's dad did, so every time this guy comes in to KO's office to talk about work, it's like his father is there. And not too long after that, they cut away to this caller who's been waiting for ages to talk about baseball, which he does, quite calmly. Me, I would have been rolling on the floor, saying, "you guys are so fucked up!"

9. The funny parts were quite funny, but the rest of it was kinda blah.

Keith stayed in for the last hour because he claimed to be worried about Dan's state of mind. Maybe that's why the show was so strange. He said he could stick around because he "had the night off" from his show--"Yeah, I'm working three hours Sunday."

Anyway, the story about Dan getting only hard-boiled uncolored eggs "and about seven jellybeans" in his Easter basket and throwing the eggs at the door was hilarious, with Keith putting him "on the couch" to talk about how this had affected him to the point where a story about someone else hitting someone's door with something was a fascination to him. Keith was going on about having spent so many years in therapy that he would soon be qualified for them to "take the lobster bib off me" and become a therapist himself. He also said he was lying on a couch when telling the story about the executive with his father's cologne-and-cigars smell. (Well, hey, I think we also got more insight from that not only into KO's dynamic with said executive, but into why he took up cigars in the first place...his grandpas smoked them, his dad smoked them...) I couldn't help but wonder..."He isn't referring to Rick Kaplan, is he?"

But everything kind of got mucked up by technology. About 45 minutes into the second hour, Keith was cut-off in mid-spiel by a commercial, and when they came back Dan was patched in on a phone line for some strange reason. (Obviously they were in different studios this time--Keith in NY and Dan in Bristol--but Keith was the one you could hear the most clearly and Dan was the one connected by phone.) At that point Keith asked if the technical problem might be cleared up if he signed off, and Dan said yes, so he signed off. It didn't solve the problem, though--for the whole last 15 minutes, Dan remained patched in on a phone line.

It's too bad I wasn't able to record the show today. This is the best I can do to tell what went on as far as non-sports talk went--I can't make a transcript and they don't publish any that I know of. I had to listen on the Web, and my listening was constantly interrupted by one work crisis after another so my attention was not there all the time.

on edit: They also talked for a while about high gas prices and how Dan is now driving a hybrid. Of course, Keith did not have a whole lot to contribute in the way of personal experience on this end of the conversation, so they moved on...

10. I missed the last half of the second hour.
went into the bank to conduct what should have been a routine transaction... :banghead:

Still, it was great to hear Keith cutting up with Dan, because the news has been so unrelievedly grim lately. It's good to hear him laugh. I wonder if KO stayed around for the second hour more for himself than for Dan; I think he needs the "down-time" he gets with Dan. Yes, it is work, but it's play-time, too. Dan seems to be good therapy for lobster-bib man. ;-)
