I heard something on the way home on Richard Green's show on AAR that didn't make me happy. There's a supposedly reliable story he heard that some printer is printing materials that say Obama/Bayh. I hope they just forgot the second syllable. If we had all this waiting for Bayh, I'll be pissed.

My reaction to Chet Edwards was exactly the same as Keith's. No way would we have an Obama/Edwards ticket. There would be far too many uninformed people who would assume it was John Edwards and that would stay ingrained in their heads.

I wouldn't worry one bit about the stories of printers printing materials for this person or that. Why? Simply this:

I once worked for an institution that was in a position to select a new president. Not a world-famous institution, but obviously the choice of who would be the new president was important to people at that institution and in that community. At the time, I was managing editor of the official institutional newspaper.

The final choice was down to two guys.

Know what we did? We prepared and printed up two different special editions of the paper announcing the choice--each one featuring a headline and articles about one of the two guys.

I was kept as much in the dark as everyone else. I just did what I was told to do--prepared both versions of the special edition. Of course, the idea was that when the announcement was made, the print run with the wrong guy named in it would be destroyed, and only the one naming the actual choice would be distributed.

That's what we did, on THAT SMALL LEVEL.

I don't doubt for a second that Obama's doing the same--some decoy work, to deliberately throw people off the scent until he's ready. (In our case, we had to do it not only in order to keep the secret, but to have our issue ready in time for the announcement, because we needed more lead time in those days to get the printing done.) If that means printing up some materials that get trashed, so be it. It's part of campaign expenses as far as he's concerned, I'm sure.

Don't worry about rumors. Just wait.
