Things didn't work out. (And yes, this is off topic, so sue me.)
Edited on Sun Jul-20-08 04:08 AM by SeattleGirl
I just lost my new job, after only 3 weeks. My bosses are convinced that I lied to them about my credentials, but I did not. I have never lied in an interview, on an application, or on a resume. I have never said I had a qualification I don't have.

Yet,

they are convinced I did. That I "misrepresented" myself (their word; just a nice euphemism for lying).

I am stunned, I'm hurt, and I'm angry.

I had my choice of being fired or resigning.

No avenue was given to me to appeal this charge.

I was so excited about this job, and knew I would be a good fit.

The person who told me I had to leave said he thought I was a good fit too, but because THEY had the idea they did ("misrepresenting" myself), he had no choice but to tell me I could no longer work there, and there was nothing I could do about it.

I don't even know what to do now.

1. Oh, SG
I'm so, so sorry. I know how excited you were. Do you have any legal recourse so you can clear your name, at least? This makes no sense.

:cry: :hug:

16. I'm going to consult with an attorney about it.
They have no solid evidence to support their claim that I lied; I have evidence that on two of the three charges, I did NOT lie. In the third instance, their only "evidence" is that two people say they heard me say the same thing, which I didn't say. I know that's a he said/she said thing, but given that I can prove the other two charges are false, I think that's good for me.

I knew you were so excited about this new job. Talk to a labor lawyer or something. Like Sharon said you have to clear your name. :hug: :hug:

3. Oh SG
That sucks! :hug: I know the KOEB doesn't pay well, ok, doesn't pay at all, but you are a good fit here! :loveya:

If you have the gumption, I'd speak with an employment attorney to see if it is true that there is "nothing you can do about it."

:grr: to the asshats!
:loveya: :hug: to SG!!!!!!! Here's to a better job soon!!!

28. sounds like you have a plan now
and that is good. When I first read your post I was stunned. I know if I was stunned you have to be too but a hundred times worse. I also know MD is an "at will" state so there isn't much you can do to get a job back but have no clue about your state. It is worth checking out. The others had good advice and I know you are smart enough and tough enough to do what you need to do to keep them from screwing up your reputation. Hang in there and give yourself a break when you can. You have been through so much and need to remember to take care of you in there too. Sending lots of positive vibes and :hug:s.

6. Oh SG, I'm so sorry.
Its terrible to lose a job and then to have it compounded with unfair and untrue accusations is just awful. Don't they have to prove that what they say is accurate, I would think so but I don't know. It sounds quite suspect to me, wouldn't people be able to just say anything as their reason for firing someone then, if they didn't have to back up their reasons with proof.

21. I think they do have to prove it.
My daughter was in a similar situation a few years ago. When she applied for unemployment bennies, the company protested, but when push came to shove, they couldn't prove that she had done what they had accused her of doing. Nothing in writing, nada, zip, zero. So, they lost; she won.

I'm hoping it will be the same for me.

7. If they fight you on unemployment...
MAKE them tell you WHY they thought you lied at an unemployment hearing. Sounds like a ploy to deny you unemployment benefits. And yes,talk to an attorney and TAKE the attorney with you to the hearing because they have severely damaged your reputation! Only one person can speak for each side at a hearing. If they DON'T fight you, have the attorney subpoena your employment record at this company and, if neccessary, depose the fools to get the full reason for your firing out of them.

I know it's gut wrenching and expensive but you really have no choice. They have made you unemployable.

9. What in tarnation...
SG, I'm not just sad for you, I'm angry!

I'm wondering if you shouldn't get a lawyer (if you can--maybe someone will take this on pro bono?)

Not that you should want to work for a place that will treat you like this, but you could get great satisfaction if you could score a legal victory against them.

:hug: You have all my sympathy. Get out there and keep looking. And see if there isn't some way you can make your point.

23. I've decided to talk to an attorney about this.
I also filed for unemployment, and I will present my side of the story to the unemployment office. Let the other side try to present evidence that I lied. I didn't, and they cannot prove that I did.

12. That totally blows.
And how horrible that they impugned your character. Why didn't they just tell you it wasn't working out instead of lying? Have you found out if there's any legal recourse? You certainly deserved much better treatment than this, that's for sure.

So sorry, SG. :hug::hug:

That's such a shame it would happen to you like this! After reading this I can conclude one thing--someone very evil and has no soul didn't want you there. I've had to deal with stuff like that for many years in various jobs, and it all boils down to petty jealousy and envy. Someone with an agenda that's not company policy but wants to rule everything saw you as competition and invented the lies in order to get you out of the way. That's the impression I'm getting. By all means, you must do the following:

1. Be encouraged and trust God;
2. Get a lawyer that specializes in employment matters like this;
3. Continue the job search, even if it's with a temp agency in the short term.

I'm in much prayer for you. I'll PM you so we can chat further.

You'll get through it, hon. You will not be forsaken!

Shot in the dark, but their decision does not sound rational at all. It sounds to me like they wanted to get rid of you for some other reason.

I'm sorry that you lost your job. That really sucks.

32. I really don't know what their politics are, but because the place I
was working is union, and while I couldn't join the union, I was covered by their benefit plan, I don't think being a liberal would be a problem. Many of the union members picketed John McSame when he was here a couple of months ago.

So, again, I don't know what happened; all I know is, I'm out of a job.
