If you have to wait and wait and wait for things to happen slowly, you tell yourself the wait is agonizing and you wish it would just have happened suddenly, so you and she don't have to go through all this. But believe me, if you have it happen suddenly and unexpectedly out of the blue, you have no time to prepare yourself, no time to say goodbye. Nothing but stunned disbelief and bereavement.

Neither way is better. Both completely suck. And you don't ever get "over" it. You just get "through" it.

I don't mean I don't care and don't miss mom, but I realized how much her illness had been weighing on me. I was always worried about her, always afraid when one of my sisters called me, always on eggshells when I visited mom. I wasn't aware of how much that was weighing on me until today. I know mom is at peace, and I know she doesn't want us to worry and fret overly much (though she would understand when we have times of doing that).

It's kind of weird to come to that understanding.

My siblings and I kept a running log at mom's house (we all took turns staying with her), and my youngest brother said he read it after mom died, and said he just couldn't believe all that mom had been through. When you're going day-by-day, it's hard to see that, but to see the bigger picture, you really get a good sense of what that person went through.

Chronic illness affects everyone in the ill person's life to one degree or another, not just the person who is ill, and feeling a sense of relief does not equate in any way, shape, or form to being "glad" someone is gone. It just means what it means: the person is out of pain, out of discomfort, and those left behind, though grieving, CAN breathe a bit easier because they don't always have to be on guard, just waiting for that other shoe to drop.

I think we're all feeling a little guilty that we wish it was over already. Of course two weeks ago we didn't think we'd ever have a chance to talk to her again, so we got some time back that we didn't expect. Not that we can have long conversations, but at least we can converse a little. Mostly, though, it's "raise the bed a little, no lower, no higher, no lower..." It gets to be pretty funny at times.

My comfort is that I did talk to her on the phone the day before she died, because she called me--she couldn't find a network program on TV because her local channel had preempted it and was showing it later that night instead. I told her I was picking it up just fine on my local channel. She was stuck with a Jack Hanna special. "I've got gorillas," she said.

So, one of the last conversations we had, she made me laugh.

The people here in Ohio don't believe it. Or if they do, they know she didn't work the night shift pouring coffee and waiting tables, or in a hospital emergency room, or at a 24-hour Wal-Mart. She maybe sat in front of a computer or went over paperwork. Far, far more of them have worked that "night shift" on their feet. All night long. They will not buy that she is one of them.
