Courts deny Ponca Tribe of Nebraska casino in Carter Lake, Iowa

A federal judge has ruled that the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska cannot build a casino on five acres of land in Carter Lake, Iowa.

U.S. District Judge Charles Wolle ruled that a federal commission should not have given the tribe the OK for a casino. The judge noted that the tribe had told the State of Iowa in 2002 that the land would not be used for gambling.

The judge also ruled that the National Indian Gaming Commission acted outside its authority when it granted the tribe the ability to place a casino on the land.

The States of Iowa and Nebraska, as well as the City of Council Bluffs, all opposed a casino. They filed suit against the federal government seeking to block the tribe's plans.
