1. I think all you need is a MySpace page.

4. Yes it is a joke.
It just seems that everyone is Cherokee. I've met about a hundred or so white people that have sworn to me that they are descendant from a Cherokee princess. That is no exaggeration. I've also met a shitload of white skinned blue eyed hillbilly hard core republican types who carried BIA cards with the Cherokee affilitation. I just see the humour in the situation.
I guess the strategy has been to assimalate into the whiteman' world by marrying into it: and it's been that way for a hundred years or so. I also think that you should be at least 1/8 native blood and be required to participate in native rituals.
But that's just me...

Now that I've offended everyone, I must get on my big pony and head on out.

7. Pretty good one, at that.
Hard to pick up sarcasm without hearing the words spoken. No harm done. From the time of the first Europeans (Hernando De Soto) the Tsalagi recognized that these 'other' people did not view them as fully human, so in order to save their asses they decided to intermarry in the hopes that the children of such unions would convince their fathers that they were people and not less-than-human savages or beasts. So, there was an actual program to promote this type of mixing by the Cherokee. They had no experience with Europeans and didn't know how cold they could be. There were actually two daughters of Old Hop Toy who accompanied some of the first traders back to England. The title of Emperor was conveyed to OHT, and his daughters were given the title of princess. These titles were rescinded around the time of the American Revolution when some Cherokees fought against the British in favor of the Colonists. There were also Cherokees who fought with the British to try to wipe out the Colonists. Maybe you know all this already, but that is one of the reasons there are so many white-skinned, blue-eyed Tsalagi. Their original idea was to make these violent strangers part of the family and insure the survival of the people. They succeeded better than most other tribes which is why there are so many of us today. Degree of blood is a white man's invention. The amount never made a damn to the tribe.

2. Osiyo!
Here is a link to the Cherokee Nation Website. http://www.cherokee.org/SiteRegistration/login.aspx Your friend can go there and download the forms. The main qualification is that you must be able to prove that one of your relatives was on the Dawe's Rolls (enrollment closed in 1907 for the Western Band). If you can find your ancestor on these rolls, then you provide the specified information to prove that you are related and apply to the tribe for a Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood (CDIB). If your friend's mother already has a CDIB, then it should be fairly easy. If not, this is the best place to start and the only where you can apply. Good luck!

8. Dawes Final Rolls of the Five Civilized Tribes
Here is "the list" of those that were on the final rolls (post-Trail of Tears). You should select "Cherokee" for the tribe and type in the surname of the person(s) you are looking for.

They may or may not be on this list, it depends. If they are not on this list, then descendants from said relation are not considered "verifiable". However, it does not mean that said person is not Cherokee or any of the other tribes that were removed.

http://www.accessgenealogy.com/native/finalroll.php?s_roll=29866

Best of luck, you'll be needing it!
