What tribes are represented at DU?

Hello all...this forum has been quiet for a while, and I apologize for that, my posting time is somewhat limited at times. My question is, if you are American Indian, what tribe are you? I'm Haida, from southeast Alaska. My tribe originated from British Columbia, and migrated north into the islands in SE Alaska. Here is a link, for whomever is interested...

Kentucky Cherokee. They were not on any roll that I know of.

Try proving it. It is ridiculous really. Mine show on the rolls but I have not pursued it. It is hard to prove something when you have no records to back you up.

You might want to check out the DVD about the Trail of Tears. It is really well done and after you see this, you'll know why we are not to be found.

25. Cherokee/Choctaw/ Muskogee

Only one great grandmother on the Dawes Roll, although all my grandparents and some ggrandparents were born in Indian Territory (now Oklahoma) before the land run. Some born there before the Trail of Tears. The great-grandmother who was on the rolls was the least 'native' looking one of all, but from the family who was the most financially astute.

Yes, I've been pushing Diane pretty hard, I guess, but she's such a wonderful candidate I just want to tell everybody. We may actually have old Don on the run. Have you read any of the newspaper articles I've posted in the Alaska forum about the race? The Daily News has published some really good editorials against him. I'm just waiting for the newspaper's endorsement. If they endorse Young after all the bad things they've written about him over the past month, I'm going to be really, really disappointed. He's such a slime.

My bud J is Tlinget too, and I told him he better help his people out for a change and vote! He was one of those people who "why vote, it don't matter" types...but I got him to register to vote...

The only way we're ever going to get rid of dead weight like Don Young is for REAL people to get involved. From what I know, I don't think Native Americans are very well represented in Congress, and certainly not Native Alaskans, so that's just one more reason for Diane to be there, among so many other good reasons. Personally, I think she's one of the best candidates in the country. I love her fearlessness.

Tlingits and Haidas are kind of like cousins, aren't they? Back before the Europeans, were you friendly with each other or enemies? I don't know much of your history, although I know both tribes come from Southeast.

Tlingets/Haida's are enemies...well, were enemies! The Tlingets were the stronger tribe, adn turned many of the Haida/and other PAC NW tribes into slaves as well...the Tlingets/Haida's use to canoe down to WA and start guff too...:) YOu can check my link in the OP, its a little history on the Haida...:)

at times...people, from each tribe...usually while drunk, bring up old crap when the tribes were warring...and it delves into meaningless violence, but people like that need no reason to fight, they just fight, to fight...

I haven't seen to much infighting, but I have seen it...usually young idiot kids...

My SO's family has always called themselves Cherokee, but we found records that they have been living in the area of WV near PA and MD since the 1600's and likely even earlier. This was obviously too early for the Trail of Tears and in researching it further we found that this group were most likely Shawnee probably connected to tribes ranging down from the Great Lakes. This was earlier than Tecumseh (of Ohio Shawnee) fame. When the tribes were dispersing and being suppressed in the 19th and early 20th c. the Cherokee absorbed the Shawnee, and they were actually known as Cherokee-Shawnee, hence the confusion. Apparently both spoke Algonquian languages, although the Shawnee were a lot further north than the Cherokee. It was interesting to find out the true tribal ancestry of my SO.

I'd like to write somethig about the story of these people, as historical fiction.

the shawnee were never absorbed by the cherokee. one band, catahecassa's, was placed under the jurisdiction of the cherokee nation in oklahoma. they are now out from under it.


if you were told you were cherokee, you should've stuck with that. please do not just guess at something and then call yourself that. it makes it harder for us to find our relatives..........

....Senecas in Ontario in addition to the ones who are part of the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma. Near Brantford.
There is an independent Band Of Senecas - the Tonawanda Band in the area of Akron, New York, also.
And then of course the ones on the Allegheny Rez, the Cattaraugus Rez and Oil Springs Rez (very few live there, if any at all still live there) - all in New York State.

It has been frustrating to not find any help from other family members, but I do live in South Georgia, where whiteness is all that apparently matters.

28. I Am Not Native American, But I Am Honored To Teach In A School That Is About 50% Native

Most of the Native students are Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican. There are some Menominee, Oneida, and Ojibway.
I absolutely love that school.
Just as a mention, if any of you get the Mohican News, There is an article with a picture of a summer school class I am teaching this summer.

My second wife was full blood and fluent Mnicoujou Lakota.


My only employers since 1991 have been tribal governments (three of them), tribal colleges (two of them), and myself. (I also worked a tribal college and myself prior to 1991 when I had many Indian clients).

I work at a school near the Washoe res. in carson valley NV, about 80% of the kids are native blood, and I love being around them. I wish I felt more turned in to my heritage...my family is SO WHITE!

since I have found the lineage and traced it back to the Rolls, I think I can send in the forms and try to register with the BIA, which would be really cool... anyone ever done it?

My G-grandfather was a horse buyer for the Choctaw during Territorial days. He and my ggrandmother's marriage license is listed in the Choctaw Nation and no where else! I grew up in the L.A. area, answers to questions I asked as a kid about tribal roots depended on who was asked. I've wondered over the years and thought someone here might be able to tell me.

Her father Shadrack Terrell was Cherokee from Georgia/Mississippi and I found him on the Dawes Register
But I look like my grandfather's Irish ancestors, so few people believe me when I say I'm 1/8 Cherokee! lol


Still, learning more about my heritage is something that I am very attached to. I have been in a few drumming circles (not authentic), actually helped with a Sweat Lodge for a while (couldn't partake in ceremony, I was pregnant at the time :( )

But bridging the gap is really hard. If anyone here has links or connections I can find to just begin learning more about my tribe and get involved ...I'd be very grateful!

44. Texas Cherokee

Great-great-great grandfather was Cherokee, from East Texas (Western Band of Cherokee), but not on any rolls (which, personally, I take pride in!).

I do not go around calling myself Indian, nor do I want to become a tribal member, since I do not come from an Indian cultural background (sadly), but I keep this knowledge with me at all times. As for my white heritage, I consider myself more a Celt than anything else, because the Celts were the tribal people of western Europe and were deposed and oppressed by the Romans and, then, the Christians. Aside from my Cherokee heritage, I am almost completely English, Welsh, and Scottish, and I enjoy learning about the indigenous cultures of these peoples which were also largely destroyed.

I try to learn as much as I can about "pagan" ethics and lifeways from both of my backgrounds.

Ended up getting adopted by an Aleut family up in Cordova, and spent a lot of time with hte elders of the Eyak as well.
