Intro
I donated last week for so I can post in groups now.
I'm 48 a climber and cycler. I'm probably going to do a powerlift meet in the fall. Right now my goal is to do a 2X body weight deadlift. I'll make it this summer if I can stay injury free.

3. Road
I bought an 83 Bianchi last summer. It came into the shop my son was working at as a trade in. I had a Bianchi stolen back in high school so this finally filled the void of that loss.
It replaces my 2003 Fuji which replaced my 1975 Nishiki. My son converted my Nishiki to a fixie for me.

What do you climb? How can you climb and power lift? Don't you get too bulky?

We are building a bouldering wall in our garage. I will post a pic soon.

4. Bouldering
I'm strictly a boulderer. I started out in trad back in the 70s mostly Seneca WV. Took a long break while running a business and starting a family. Got back into it with my kids and have stayed even though they dropped out of it. I'm always the old guy in the group
I'm trying not to add on too many pounds from the lifting, at least not more than the strength gains can counter act.
I have a small bouldering wall in my basement. Everything is a sit start.
I'm in the DC area and climb locally, Boone area, and Coopers WV.
Where and what kind of climbing do you do?

5. Adding strength w/o bulk
You should be doing your deadlifts in sets of low reps, like 1-5, with long rest periods. Low volume, high weight will add strength without building a lot of muscle.

You could also try two sets of 5, the second set at 80% weight of the first, 5 days a week. This will boost your strength by training the nervous system - make sure you grip the bejesus out of the bar too.

7. Thats what I do
5 reps max. I did a 305 back in November but I tore a groin muscle bouldering and had to take ~6 weeks off.

OUCH. I once pulled both groin muscles while taking a bad landing in an aikido class. The week of recovery was painful...tearing it must have hurt like all heck!

6. I am in NC now,
but I started out in the Pittsburgh and later the DC areas.

I think the first place I ever climbed outside was Coopers Rock. Did it used to be a top rope area that is converted to mainly bouldering now?

I have climbed often at Seneca :scared:

But some of the best days of my life have been spent at the New.

So as you may have guessed, I am mostly a sport climber. But now with two little kids, two and four, and a business to run, I climb indoors, if at all. We (my husband climbs seriously, too, that is how we met) are thinking of getting more into bouldering. It is too hard to keep track of two little kids and climb at a traditional roped area. But maybe, in a few years, we will be able to take them out to local bouldering areas. Won't we be the popular ones with all the twenty year olds and their ill-behaved dogs?

We are in the process of building an indoor wall at our house, even though we live ten minutes from the local rock gym. Again, too hard to keep the kids safe and climb, even inside. So we will see if my almost 40 year old tendons can take the switch to the boulders. I was wicked strong back in the day, so I think I have the strength, just need to avoid tearing stuff. I still have a bum ankle from an old bouldering injury. So we shall see.

How are your tendons and joints? Can they keep up with the demands?

Post a pic of your wall if you get a chance. I will do the same. It is almost finished :bounce:

8. How far from Boone are you?
Went there a couple of times last year. The Hounds Ear Comp was a blast. I'm not big into comps but when I go to one I usually have a great day.
Coopers has become one of the best bouldering areas around. There is still some top roping going on. The tall area near the main overlook is closed to climbing now.

As far as tendons go. I had my right rotator repaired a year ago and its doing fine. I have chronic tendonitis in my left shoulder. I almost wish it would go so I can get it fixed proper.

I'll try to post a pic of my wall/home gym this weekend

10. Not too far from Boone.
We are in Charlotte. Tons of great bouldering within day trip distance.

I haven't had a sports related injury in years, unless you count a sore hamstring from yoga. But that means I haven't been training either.
