'Fess up. How much weight did you gain
between Thanksgiving and now?

I hate to admit it, but I put on 10 pounds! :-(

I had been doing really good this year because I was so involved in long-distance cycling and had come a long way in reshaping my body. Although I didn't lose a lot, I had traded a lot of fat for muscle and went down a size and a half. But, it's creeping back.

Since I was riding about 100-125 miles per week and doing centuries once a month, I could consume a TON of carbs. When I stopped riding in late fall, I didn't cut back enough on the carbs and the holidays sent me over the edge.

Now, I'm sitting here kicking myself and feeling like a big old fat lard butt. I'm hoping that admitting you have a problem is the first step in taking control off it.

So, anything y'all want to get off your chest?

1. I've actually lost 5 lbs since Thanksgiving.
I was very careful not too over eat during the holidays and I kept up my exercise routine.

9. I lost about 5 lbs. too.

I stuck to my routine as best I could. But my gym was closed on Xmas and New Years day which would have been a work out day. So I recently had a couple of weeks I only worked out 4 days.

I'm back on track now.

3. Didn't gain any over the holidays
but I did gain about 10 when my husband came home from his last deployment in August. :P I've lost three of it, and managed to not gain any over Christmas. A small miracle considering all the baking I did lol. :D

4. I've been gaining steadily since I quit exercising
about five years ago -- from 140 to about 190 or so.

Now I have my life sort of in order -- money, career,
relationship -- so now I think it's time for the cherry
on top, getting my "in-shape" body back.

7. I think the other "distractions"
in our lives can certainly keep us from taking care of ourselves. I'm not so much concerned about how I look (well, there's a little vanity there) as how I feel. And, I'm feeling really tired and sluggish.

I really think exercise is the key. I've never done it with diet alone.

8. It's complicated, that's for sure.

I was confident, had a great body (although I didn't realize
it at the time).

But at the same time I was actively drinking, had picked
a serious "mind fuck" of a man to be in a quasi-relationship
with, and was in a dead-end job working for people who didn't
like me for very low money.

So I needed to get my head on straight emotionally and get my
life together in other areas. Exercising and being in shape
and all of that didn't fix what was wrong underneath.

It's going to be a life time commitment for me.

5. I haven't weighed in.
I was 110 the day before Thanksgiving, and I was 110 the day before Christmas Eve.

I feel like I probably put on a couple of pounds, although my clothes still fit and my measurements are the same (I measured thighs, hips, abs, and natural waist today - no change). I don't know. Maybe the bloaty "I put on a couple of pounds" feeling is due to the fact that it's PMS week.

I'm trying to weigh in only once a month, so I plan to check the scale at the end of next week. My "range" is 110-113 pounds, but I prefer to stay on the low end of the range if possible.

So, where are the people who share my misery or am I alone here?

11. No, you're not alone!
I gained about 15, though it started before the holidays.

And at 5'8" with a large frame (size 11 shoe and I'm a gal,) I'd be thrilled to be around 165 but will settle for 175 which is still ten pounds away!

13. I would be happy
to get to 140-145. I guess for some of the posters here, that sounds huge, but I'm big-boned (Really, there's a quarter-inch gap between my thumb and finger around my wrist.) and very muscular. That puts me at a size 8.

It seemed really close this summer when I was in a serious training mode, but living in the Chicago-area really puts a chink in things. I have my bike hooked up to a trainer in the basement, but I can't seem to get down there.

I've done really well with my eating habits this week so far. We'll restart the exercise next. I don't want to overwhelm myself and fail.

18. Same here
When I weighed 140 people were telling me I was too skinny and that I needed to eat more. I was also in a size 8 at that weight.

Last year I gained 20 pounds (life crisis and too much Paxil) but I lost about half of it by the fall when I weaned myself off antidepressants. I hit a plateau and started back to the gym. I finally tried a Spinning class and loved it and started going regularly. I was feeling good although still on the weight plateau.

Around that time my dog got seriously sick and I rushed home every night to be with her. She died on Jan. 2nd so I have no excuse not to go back but the momentum is gone now. I have no idea what I weigh right now but my guess is I'm almost back at 160. yech.

I did resolve to get back into a size 8 this year though. I just don't feel good unless I'm fit and it's not a vanity thing.

Good luck to both of us.

19. That's what I hate so much
about the charts. They really don't take into account body types or fitness levels. But, as you say, it's more about feeling good. I really do feel bloated and sluggish right now.

Getting over that loss of momentum thing is hard. I had an upper respiratory virus most of December, and it really kicked my butt since I have asthma. I was having a hard time breathing and was using a preventive inhaler four times a day for about a week. I was happy just to breathe, let alone try to exercise.

BUT, I'm finally all better and have only had to use my preventive inhaler only once in nearly a week and I haven't had a single episonde. So, I'm all out of excuses. :-)

BTW, sorry about your dog. I can only imagine how difficult that was.

I'm hoping posting here will help me.

22. Thank you. Yes, losing my dog was hard
She was a lot like a person to me, just a four-legged one. My house just seems so empty without her.

I'm glad you're feeling better, asthma can be debilitating but it seems you have it under control.

I also figured if I fessed up here as to how out of shape I've gotten it would motivate me to get back on the fitness bandwagon. This is the first time in 15 years my BMI has been over 25 and the thought of a bathing suit makes me shiver. THe last time was when I quit smoking and that weight was very difficult to lose.

20. I don't think a size 8 is big.
I think that's more of an average or medium size. It does depend on how you are built. Some women are very fit at a size 8, and others are out of shape at a size 8.

25. I don't think it's big either.
My sister is a few inches taller than I, she has a medium frame size, and she looks and feels best at about 150-155 pounds and a size 10. She's also very fit, and I think she would be too thin at a size 8. I'm a short, small-framed person, and 150 would not be healthy for me.

What's right for one person is not always going to be right for another.

21. I'm just curious...
Is that a common measurement, measuring the gap between your thumb and your finger? What finger do you use? I happen to have pretty short fingers (and toes too). When I measure the gap between my thumb and index finger I get 0.5 inches. I have no gap between my thumb and middle finger. I think this type of measurement might fail in the instance the someone has really long or short fingers.
I don't doubt that you know your own body frame size, I'm just pointing out that I don't think this kind of measurement always works.

Here is a website I found that has a few different ways to determine body frame size that might work better.

I especially like the exercise calorie calculator, giving you and idea of how many calories you burn with a number of activities.

12. I lost 3 pounds
The holidays aren't much different than any other time of the year for me. Additionally, being in Florida, it's a little easier to stay active outdoors year round (I went mountain biking on Christmas).

15. Hey, I'm in Florida too.
The weather does make exercising a lot easier this time of year. I'm going to be moving back north in June. I'll have a get a gym membership so that I can exercise during the winter.

14. I gained 2.5 pounds between my vacation Nov 17th and New Year's Day.
But it only took me a week back on my diet to take it off, so I am back on the right track!:-)

16. I...uh...'lost' my scale
so I can't be sure but my pants indicate I may have put on at least a couple pounds. I'm not keeping them because I hate to shop and the idea of having to upsize the wardrobe is too repugnant.

17. 0 lbs.
Nope, not an ounce. Of course, between Oct 2003 and summer 04 I put on 20 lbs if that makes you feel better. I'm at 240 now, plan on about 200 in a year. Slow & steady, you know?

27. I put on about 10 lbs myself
due to not following any type of diet plan and not exercising beyond taking long walks on the weekends.

When I was doing good, I was down near 155, but at last weigh-in I was at 170. I tend to drop down to about 160 or so once I start controlling my diet more, though.
