OK, I've seen it all now!!! Lord you showed me a BLUEBIRD!!!
I am a first time visitor to this forum, and what brings me here is astounding. All of my adult life I have been looking to see a bluebird. Had not seen any since I was a very young child. (I'm 68 now) I live in the Litchfield Hills of Ct. We've had a mild winter until this month. I found it unusual the past few winters to see the robins overwintering here, but today for the first time I saw at least a dozen Eastern Bluebirds (a flock I guess) flying back and forth from the woods behind my house, across the brook back there to a tall columnar Arbor Vitae on the outside of my 6ft. fence. They were in and out and stopping for a rest on the top of my shed, and even some sitting on my fence facing me in my kitchen window. In this window I have a 6" round sun catcher with a picture of "The Angry Bluebird" a famous photo by Michael Smith. It was my late husbands favorite bird. We were avid birdwatchers and used to go looking for bluebirds. The State has been making efforts for the past ten years or so to get them back by erecting TALL bluebird houses on reservoir properties around the State. I have lived in this town for 4 yrs. now, and this is the very first time I have seen a bluebird since I can't remember when. I don't know if this is an Omen of some sort or a weather phenomenon, or related to global warming, or even a signal that something is amiss, (birds dying in mass numbers all over the world for no known reason.) Has anyone else out there experienced anything similar this year?? I was totally thrilled to have been able to see them again and had to call everyone I knew (who cared) and tell them about it today. Birds mean a lot to me. I live in a perfect bird watching area. I have the river down behind my house, woods on another side as well as a brook, and across the road there is a mountain with a rocky outcropping that has an aerie from which I've seen many eagles soaring and hunting for food. I can sit on my little deck in back with my binoculars and watch their soaring majesty. I think I got a few shots of the bluebirds today. Hope they come out alright. Don't have a digital, so I'll need to wait and see.

2. Thank you!
What magnificent photos! I think the reason I am so crazy about bluebirds is this. I was a war baby (color me age 68)There were two very popular songs That came out of that era. "Bluebird of Happiness" and "White Cliffs of Dover" (they'll be Bluebirds over, the White Cliffs of Dover) When I was little I thought that the common Blue Jay was a bluebird. My Mom set me straight when once at a picnic she showed me a bluebird, and I thought they were so beautiful! Until yesterday, I don't believe I had seen another one! Also, I'm absolutely in love with the photo "Mad Bluebird" by Michael Smith!!! I'm so happy that you responded! O8) DC

6. Any time...
There were quite frequent visitors in December and January. They seem to have tailed off now in February but I have still seen a few.

5. It might be a good idea!
I know they like to have a specific size, and opening, plus they like to be high. I haven't seen any more since Saturday. Do you think it was a flock migrating South because it's starting to finally feel like winter?? I'll try anything to get them to come back!!

8. A co-worker reported seeing a flock of five last Friday (Feb. 23)
This is in southern Wisconsin. My earliest ever was Feb. 15, but this was in an area where the species has been suspected to overwinter.

10. I've been seeing them all winter and now into spring as well.
I am up in North Central Texas. Here is my latest pic of one that I took on a cloudy day. The focus is a bit soft, but I still like the pic.

13. I hate when that happens!
There is a blue heron that I always almost get a shot of,before it flies away.Maybe this will be my year, although I haven't seen it yet, still a bit early.
