Am I the only Smiths fan at DU?
Surely someone else out there loves them as well...

1. I love The Smiths! Johnny Marr is one of my favorite guitar players of all time.
He is absolutely amazing.

If you haven't seen it, watch this interview with Noel Gallagher of Oasis talking about The Smiths.

2. You're not the only one
They were big way back when I was in high school but I never got into them then. It was only after I started getting interested in playing guitar that I really "discovered" them, thanks to Johnny Marr's guitar playing.

3. Johnny Marr was in the later assembly of "The The"
There were some lively Smiths threads here about four years ago when I started posting. I can still remember a female DUer saying she remembered that her overweight college girlfriends used to listen to the Smiths and groove on its dark meanings and that she was still a Smiths fan, although she was not overweight. Ok, that was not very sensitive. Maybe not even funny. Sigh.

That was excellently-produced music. They really knew how to nail that "dark and moody" feeling as pioneered by the likes of Depeche Mode--my buddy's wife's fav--who he began to refer to as "Depress Mode".

I remember buying the vinyl disk of "The Queen is Dead" and listening to it in my small apartment when I moved away for my second job. That one is regarded as their best.

I loved Morrisey's solo material, too. Every day is just like Sunday. Every day is silent and grey.

4. I like them a lot!
I get a bit annoyed with how Morissey always sings in thirds (but I'm a bit of a "prog snob" and I really do try to make allowances for other styles and stuff, but still....) Other than that I love the lyrics and the attitude of the music.

Back in my Endless Stretch of Dark Loneliness (tm), I used to play the song "How Soon Is Now?" all the time. Still one of my favorite songs and always will be.

You really need to be into latin stuff or Argentine Tango to appreciate them but I must confess they're pretty cool. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZk-LJ_KCMg

This is simply wicked with Lopez : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4u6ycs90YIk&mode=related&search=
