1. All the rockers are lightweights compared to Joe Pass.
Or Wes Montgomery, Charlie Christian, Tal Farlow, Herb Ellis, or of course Django.

8. Apples and oranges, I think...
or do you really believe Django could play like Van Halen if given an electric guitar?

It's an impossible comparison, like trying to compare Babe Ruth to Barry Bonds. Sure, Bonds has the single-season home-run record and recently passed Ruth on the all-time list. But does that necessarily make him better, when, at times in his career, Ruth -- by himself -- led most _teams_ in home runs?

Trying to compare the greats of ancient history with the modern ones seems a useless endeavor.

like Django?

edited to say... this is stupid. comparing a French gypsy in the 1920's to Van Halen...not even worth comment.

10. I have no doubt that Django could learn to do the pyrotechnics
of Eddie Van Halen, or Alvin Lee or Steve Vai for that matter. But could any of those guys play what Django did, with the same harmonic complexity and subtlety and taste? (And with only 2 fingers, at that?)

I think my money is still on the jazzers, as far as "heavyweight" vs. "lightweight."
