"New" New Wave?
Edited on Sat Feb-26-05 05:25 PM by NewHampshireDem
It seemed that 2 years ago we had a revival of garage rock, with groups like The White Stripes, Jet, The Vines, The Hives, The Strokes, The Donnas, The Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Is this the year (or so) of New New Wave? EW hailed The Killers as the second coming of Duran Duran, and with Franz Ferdinand and other groups (Modest Mouse, Jimmy Eat World and other emo-lite bands) they seem to be ushering a new era of New Wave/post-punk music.

What do you think? Is the 80's revival inspiring a new generation to unleash their inner Casio or am I over analyzing this?

Either way, I like what I've heard. :)

1. It just may be a matter of focus.
Although you can hear a lot of New Wave influence on Gwen Stefani's album.

The Killers album is really good, like a record I might have missed hearing 20 years ago, but I don't really hear much Duran Duran in there.

What an underrated period that was. So much creativity came out of the wake of punk's DIY ethic.

2. I'm definitely picking up the Killers this weekend
That lead song, Mr Bright Side, is just incredible.

Like you said, it sounds like something I missed in 85.

For that matter, so did No Doubt's "Spiderwebs". Hmm.

5. It reminds me of some of Duran Duran's stuff ...
IMHO, it's more in the vein of "Rio," "Girls on Film," and "Planet Earth" than "The Reflex," "The Union of the Snake," or "Hungry Like The Wolf." The latter I hear more in Franz Ferdinand.

Either way, it's good to have that kind of sound back in music.

6. They suck.
I hate them with a passion, yet they're going to blow up and get huge in the next few months or so. The BBC is never wrong with these kinds of things, just you watch.

7. The Pulsars.
Anyone heard "The Tunnel Song?" It's great. Sounds like early 80s era Cars.
