Ben stuck in an alt country/rockabilly phase
I have been listening to Dwight Yoakam, Steve Earl, The Flatlanders, Joe Ely, solo, Johnny Cash, BR5-49 etc...

What are some of your favorite alt country acts? No new country puleeeaaazeeee. ;)

1. I've been listening to a few acts recently
among them are Neko Case and her Boyfriends, Gram Parsons, The Jayhawks, Emmylou Harris (some older stuff) and The Flamin' Groovies (which can be more rock that alt country).
My favorite is Gram Parsons in all his incarnations: International Submarine Band, The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers and the Fallen Angels. Oh, and don't forget the solo stuff!

2. Junior Brown kicks ass.
Cowboy Junkies are good, too. And "new country" sucks more than Rock Hudson at a Frisco bathhouse circa 1975.

3. Love the analogy!
New country makes my skin crawl. Of course I hate pop of all genres.

I'm always the only one to bring them up. I guess I'm their only fan. :(

Too bad. The rest of you don't know what a voice you're missing in Maria McKee. (Namely Patsy Cline meets Janis Joplin.)

Oh, and Rank and File!!!!

Oh, and Rubber Rodeo!!!!!

Are they still around?

8. They broke up in 1986 after two albums
Edited on Mon Feb-28-05 08:44 PM by tuvor
They're both good, but the first self-titled one is more of what you're looking for.

Maria McKee, the lead singer, has a few solo albums out, but they're not at all alt-country in style.

Oh, yeah, she's also done duets with Dwight Yoakam and Steve Earle on Buenas Noches and Copperhead Road CDs, respectively.

10. I thought so
I was really into "new wave" and "alternative" anything in the 80's. Anything from metal to alt country.

7. Wilco, Son Volt, Uncle Tupelo
I heartily recommend the first and last, the second isn't as good but still isn't all too bad.

9. Slowly getting into Wilco
I like them better the more I listen to them. Isn't Uncle Tupelo related to them somehow? Is the lead singer a former member of UT? Anyhow, I have purchased through iTunes several of the songs off their two latest albums and I like it. I especially like the song "Theologian."

12. Jeff Tweedy
He is the singer for UT, and Wilco was the band he formed when Uncle Tupelo broke up. Also, Son Volt is made up of a couple other members of Uncle Tupelo and was formed after UT broke up.

25. Didn't know that
He seems to look sort of geeky and not the kind that I would expect to be playing this kind of music. His voice and music doesn't seem to fit the person, but anyhow, I like it.

Live, they are not to be believed.

Radney Foster, Guadalcanal Diary, Alejandro Escovedo, Lucinda Williams, Rodney Crowell, Rosanne Cash....and definitely Joe. Joe's the man.

Those are my biggies.
