Is there a file with Jesus' words?
You know, like the New Testament? :)

Seriouly, I'd like a file of just His words.

I've never been very religious. Was raised more or less Baptist.

I've often hated religion because of what I see the right-wingers doing with it.

But as I get older (and I'm not that old) I wonder more about what the man himself said.

Thanks in advance!

1. the words in red
I am not the expert, but what Jesus said
(through numerous translations by others, btw,
and not firsthand) are the words in red in
the New Testament. The Gospel of Matthew has
a lot of what he supposedly said.

You have to read these Gospels knowing
that they weren't written by any of the
guys who hung around him and the first
letters of Paul were written thirty years
after Christ's death. You have to read
the Gospels in context with who was in
power during those days...the Romans and
their hired surrogates and that there
were many protests by various groups.
Richard Horsley's "Jesus and Empire"
talks about a Jesus who was working to
renew Israel and oppose the rulers.

The Gospels also have to be read in whole,
not dissected like the fundies like to do.
The conflicts we are experiencing now are
similar IMO to what Jesus faced during occupation
of the Romans.

2. thanks
Yes, I agree that context is important. But I'm interested at looking at the specific words of Jesus. Although we have no way if He's accurately quoted. ;)

I have a Bible, of course. But mine doesn't have Jesus' words highlighted in red like some I've seen. I'll just go buy a new one. Don't know why I didn't think of that last night... except that I was very sleepy, yet unable to sleep.

Midway through composing this reply, I realized I should ask Google. I found something that looks promising, but I haven't really looked it over closely yet. I'm not sure who JB Phillips is, but it may be good.

Anyway, thanks for the reply, and good wishes to you!
