Spin-off of media topic: I confess... I watched Bachelorette.

OK, I am NOT a fan of these types of shows, but I watched the first two episodes this season because the coworker of someone I know was one of the guys. He got booted the first night, because he hit on the waitress, who was the Bachelorette's best friend. Anyway, I watched it again last night, and was very disappointed to see the one black man rejected. I don't think there are any other non-whites this season. There is one non-American, a French man I find very annoying. (Nothing against France. I am part French. But this guy is cheesy!LOL)

They barely showed any interaction between the bachelorette and Ryan (the black contestant), so I was actually surprised he made the first cut. The second episode, they briefly showed him having a drink with her, and asking if dating outside her race was an issue for her. Of course she said, "Oh, no, not at all." But then who knows if she meant it, or said it for the audience. Hopefully she meant it. But why did that have to be the ONE thing they talked about? I mean, they're both human.... surely they had other things to say!

But he was so dang adorable!!! If she had no problems with race, how could she NOT give him a rose????LOL!!! :loveya:

Since I normally don't watch those shows, do any of you know if an interracial couple ever hooked up on any of them, or if any contestants of other races made it pretty far?

1. I watched the first episode
just to see the line up. I saw that the Bachelorette was in on selecting the 25 to make it onto the show. I was shocked a black guy made it onto the show! I was thinking, "of course, they have to have the obligatory black guy. I don't know why, he'll be sent home on the first cut."

As far as I know, no non-white contestant has made it past the 1st cut. I don't know why they bothered to cast him in the first place since the show would never let an interracial couple happen.

3. I watched the first one
the Bachelorette I mean, and I've noticed the same thing. It's like the black guy is just there to meet some weird quota, but he isn't seriously considered really.

I don't recall from the one I did watch but were there even any people of other ethnicities on the show besides the black guy? Any Asians, Latinos, American Indians, Pakistani's, anything?

It's kind of disheartening when you think about it. This nation is made up of many different people. Who can say that someone can only find love with someone of the same race/ethnicity?

That's my problem with these kinds of shows--they affirm this White Anglo Saxon ideal of romance, love, marriage, etc. Other ethnicities don't fall in love? They aren't interesting or successful? I know a lot of it is based on what the lead person is looking for, and who or what she is attracted to, but I think they are sending a limiting message overall.

It's the same problem I have with shows like the OC and Beverly Hills 90210 when it was on the air.

5. I didn't see any other people of other ethnicities,
unless they looked very caucasian. They didn't give last names, so I guess someone who could "pass" could have possibly have been there, but no one as far as I could tell.

10. What you said
I'm disappointed "Desperate Housewives" doesn't have a black family/"housewife" (but I like Eva Longoria).

12. Looks like we're getting our wish!
At the very end of last night's episode, they showed the new couple moving in... Alfre Woodard was the woman! I didn't catch who the man was!

I like Alfre. I wonder how they'll tie her into the stories?

7. The girl that "won" the last Bachelor
is latina. When the bachelor went to meet her parents, she had to translate for her dad. I think that's the most ethnic that show's ever gotten.

8. I'm always surprised when a person of color makes the cut
but I don't think that I've ever seen them chosen

in any of these shows

they don't want to offend middle America who still can't handle the fact that there are inter-racial relationships out there

9. So true...
As someone stated above, if they had a black, asian or latina bachelorette I would watch that!

THAT would be Must See TV for me! LOL!

13. New show, same script
Saw most of the first installment of Beauty and the Geek. The 14 contestants could have been right off of the cast of Friends. New show, standard WASP cast, no surprise. :eyes:

Can't freak out the viewing audience. There can't be geeks or beauties who aren't WASP--especially geeks. "Those" people can't be that smart!
