I need more humidity in my house.
I live in a small house that has a forced-air HVAC system. I keep the temp. at about 68 degrees. The humidity gauge reads about 44% and I would like to boost it to 55% to help with dry skin and allergies. I have had cool mist electrostatic humidifiers in the past but wouldn't use them again because of the white dust they emitted.

Does anyone have suggestions to help me add more moisture? I live in GA, where the humidity isn't usually low, but with the forced air heat pump, my skin seems to be extremely dry.

1. 44% should be adequate
I live in the desert where relative humidity is generally under 20% and haven't noticed any particular dessication, although I do need to water house plants a lot more frequently.

What helps dry skin is getting rid of soap residue after a shower. I like to rinse off with a half and half vinegar and water solution. I notice that makes my skin a lot less dry in winter. It doesn't seem to be as much of a problem in summer when perspiration does the trick.

Winter allergies are usually from dust and mold that is blown through the house by a heating system. I'd suggest you get the ducts cleaned out, but that would likely only solve part of the problem. What will solve it completely is warmer weather.

3. I agree 44% should be adequate
I keep the humidifier attached to my furnace at 35% and everything is fine.

This is the first winter I have had an attached furnace humidifier and it makes a huge difference in the comfort level.

I highly recommend them.

2. If you use distilled water there wont be any white dust when using the humidifier.
No minerals in the water, no dust.
