Necessity is the mother of invention. I re-plumbed my bathroom sink today.
Not just new faucets but the drains too. The faucets needed to be replaced but the drains were starting to corrode. I measured and drew diagrams and off to Ace hardware. They tried to sell me the white PVC flexible piping. Ugly. We have had trouble with the sinks because the drains did not line up with the traps. I took off the sink, traced the shaped back along a 3/4 inch piece of wood and cut it to shape for a backboard, which would bring it out enough to align the sink with the trap. Bought a section of pipe from the fitting under the sink with a transition from 1" to 1+1/4"into the trap with a heavy gasket seal.

I primed the new backboard and mounted it to the wall. Then mounted the sink to the backboard. It is about a few degrees off level. Need a second hand to help me with that but in the meantime I have my sink back. The pedestal is back and slides in better. Hooray for me.

I think I'll do the upstairs sink now that I know how better to do the job. Years ago the plumbers jury rigged this place and we would have to constantly fix stuff liked this.

1. good for you!!! I did all the finish plumbing in my CA bungalow
if you have a few tools and the time, it's pretty easy usually

it's just tough on the old body contorting under the sink eh?? but with a pedestal it's probably easier than climbing into the cabinet

and BTW :yourock:

2. I hate plumbing like poison
I'll do electrical work, carpentry, drywall, anything but plumbing.

Imagine my delight when the plumber I hired a couple of weeks ago when the supply line to the house blew wandered around and fixed all the niggling little problems I'd just been living with for years. He didn't even charge me for half of it.

It feels great when it works.

4. Every place in this old house that has pipes, has problems.

Many have been fixed along the way but my latest ...if I can figure it out, involves the faucets in the tub,
No water shutoff to the tu(or to the whole upstairs bathroom). I must turn off the water to the whole house in the basement. The washers for the H & C faucets wear out in about 3 or 4 weeks. I have tried to replace the stems but am told that this particular type is no longer made. I just have to cope with replacing the washers. The grey ones I pick up at Ace wear out in no time. They are 1/4 R, They fit into the recess and are slightly raised. For all I know, they are not the right size but nobody seems to know. The kids there are great but except for helping you find the paint or whatever, they have no "how-to" expertise.

The do it yourself books do not address this faucet thing wither.

With some guidance, I will tackle anything (after unplugging it)but this bugger has me stumped.

I just cannot get myself to touch the table saw. If I can't do it with a skill saw and jig saw, I'll try another way. I have not faced a table saw sized project yet anyway. Hope I never do.
Anything else is a go.

3. Good thinking Paper Roses
Making a pattern shows the store clerks just what you want in exacts. The plastic was a quick sale on parts! The diagram made who ever it was do a little thinking. And yes plumbing perfect is always straight lines, but that is not always the case is it!

5. My b-i-l is a plumber.
I know my limitations and those of my other half. :)

About three months ago we decided to replace the faucet in the main bathroom. DH called his brother to "help" him. Before the job was finished we had to get a new sink and replace all the pipes under it. It pays to have talented relatives who will work for dinner and dessert as payment.
