Anybody Here Know Anything About Wiring a Hi-Lo Switch to a 2-Speed Pool Pump Motor?
If you do, please respond, and I'll post pictures and questions. The hubby is about to pull out his last hair, and I'm just as frustrated. We can't seem to find anyone who knows much of anything about this, or who can explain it in terms we can understand. We thought it would be a fairly straightforward, simple matter, but evidently it's more complicated than we thought. HELP???!?

1. I would have to look at it.

how accessible is that pump. Who makes that pump ? The name of the manufacturer should be on a plate attached to the pump mortar with the model number /serial number , the phase motor it is volts and so on. OK ,than look up the 800 number on the computer ! Another question is what kind of pool, indoor spa or outdoor pool or spa? And you might show a pic of the pump and show the switch. Also the name of the pump manufacturer.

Simply,to replace that switch you must have the same type of switch to do the replacement. The manufacturer can ship that replacement part to you, or they will tell you where to place that order in your locality , or they may tell you it's a switch you can buy at any electrical supply store. So, what's the name of the manufacturer of the pump motor and what are it's specs ? All that information should be on a plate attached to the motor.

As I said I would have to look at it! Got any Pics !

2. Oh, I have all that information.
I just wanted to ask whether anyone knew anything about the subject before posting the pictures, etc. We keep running into dead ends with no one knowing anything about it.

Here's the deal:

We are in the process of bringing back to life the swimming pool that came with the house we bought last year. We've had to replace the pump motor (it was burned out). The replacement is an A.O. Smith 230v 1 HP dual-speed motor (STS1102R). The switch to operate it was sold separately. It is also made by A.O. Smith, and is an end cover for the motor that has a High-Off-Low toggle (615332). Neither came with any wiring diagrams, so we are trying to puzzle out which wire goes where. Here are some pictures:

#1 - Motor and inner side of switch:

#2 - Motor and outer side of switch (label in lower left corner shows what toggle switch reads):

#3 - Close-up of end of motor (I added labels for the connections since there was too much glare in the photo to read them, and inserted, in the lower right corner, what the little label to the side of the connections reads):

#4 – Wiring diagram from a page in A.O. Smith’s online motor manual ( http://www.aosmithmotors.com/pdf/brochures/3300.pdf ) (page 45) that seemed appropriate (?):

My husband says with the switch in the 'low' position, there's continuity between the purple and black wires. With the switch in the 'high' position, there's continuity between the purple and yellow wires. On the switch, the yellow wire connects to the position marked 'low' on the toggle, and the black wire to the position marked 'high' on the toggle. The purple wire connects to the position marked "off."

We aren't even sure this diagram is the correct one. It just was the best we could find. We don't want to hook it up wrong and fry something! So, if you, or anyone else here knows anything about this, we'd appreciate some advice.

Thanks!

Yellow and black in code coloring is power , thats l1 and l2 I think. And the other where it goes is a no brainier. OK,so,in the morning I must go deal with a roof situation and estimate for a floating floor in three rooms, but this client has a indoor spa I work on from time to time and, I know the pool guy ! I'll call pool guy tomorrow morning and verify which wire connects to L1 and L2 and of course the third will connect to the terminal that is left ! If on the other hand you solve this problem yerselves post it. I can post the answer at some point in the early afternoon Tue. pacific standard time. This is a courtesy, I will not always have the time for that. I did however read the specs. on yer motor and switch ,and it must be connected right. My client spends a lot of money fer supplies at the pool spa store and the repair people know me as a contractor.

The other way is simple too. Call the manufacturer hot line 800 number and ask to speak to a tech. rep. The tech. rep. will tell you what the pool guy will tell me !In code coloring I believe I am correct yellow and black power to switch, but I will have that confirmed and to what order in sequence. And those diagrams do not match ,you are correct on that observation. It's simple, but as the saying goes, it is always better to know than it is to think that you know.!

4. Thanks so much for your help!
We very much appreciate it! We are going to try to call A..O. Smith in the morning and see if we can get an answer. I'll post what they say, if we can an answer from them. We REALLY appreciate your offer to consult with people you know. VERY much. Once this baby (the pool) is up and running, I'll post pics of the end result. We've put a lot of time and money into this project already and don't want to mess up on wiring this correctly. I don't know if you remember, but you helped us out last summer on figuring out what we needed to do to add insulation to the 4 sections of attic of this house. Thank you again for that, too. :)

5. Contacted A.O. Smith
Rep. will e mail specs tomorrow. Roof emergency.

A,o. Smith Phone (937)667-2431
Fax (937)667-5030
E mail- info@aosmith.com

When they hide the 800 number I get it from the first person to answer my call.I usually tell who ever, I'm just a small business, not the bank of New York !
Also their web site has a page that shows you local distributors. And distributor will have the wiring sequence for that particular.

7. Thanks!
We weren't able to get through to them. The line was just busy over and over again. We did find a local A.O. Smith service rep and my hubby took it over to them this afternoon to see what they said about it. What they said matched what my brother (who's an electrician but lives in another state) said to do. Now, if that matches what you get, we're set. I'm not sure right now exactly what they did tell him (or what my brother said), but will get the hubby to relay that info to me tomorrow. He's dealing with the pump, motor and electrical. I'm dealing with the skimmer and plumbing (and will have to deal with the chemicals when it's filled, too). Thanks, again, for your help!

talked to a electrican friend of mine, he said ,what did you do with the directions ! I said none came with it ! He said don't do nothing untill you call them and give them hell for that, tell them they are costing you money for the delay. Ther's the qualified electrican's view to it! I told him the wiring sequence I thought it might be, he said that could very well be right ,but if it's wrong you fry the thing.

The question I had was answered. The directions were inadvertently left out of the package deal. And that is a gross oversite. That means your problem is the fault of the manufacturer. Try calling early in the morning.

10. Is the feed 220 v.a.c.?
If you have 120 vac going to the pump it will not work in either high or low speed.

The pool renovation turned out quite well. In case anyone is interested...

We went from this:

To THIS:

And we did 95% of the work on it ourselves. :)
