Bathtub/shower question

We're building a house, and we are not concerned about resale. We are not installing a bathtub in the master bathroom, or in the first floor bathroom - we're putting showers in those bathrooms - but want to have a bathtub for our future grandchildren and a few family members who prefer baths to showers. We are building a bathroom in the basement level for that purpose.

We have two daughters who will still be living in the basement level, and they prefer a larger shower to a bathtub. I'm trying to find a compromise - something that is large enough and will feel more like a shower than a tub, but that you can still fill up to use as a bath.

To be clearer (maybe), what I'm looking for is essentially something that works MORE as a shower, but perhaps has a lower wall that you can fill up as a shallow bath. I've been doing some Google searches, but either I'm using poor words to search for it, or something like this doesn't exist. Any suggestions?

1. we had a small 'garden tub' in our master bath in PHX

wider than a normal bathtub with plenty of room for showers for two but still functioned as a bath tub when needed

ours looked a lot like this but with smooth sides instead of the 'backrest'



here's an actual pic of it, but it doesn't show how wide it is and the shelf under the window made it feel more spacious

2. I had a "garden tub" in my master shower in my trailer, too

although considerably less fancy than the one in the picture above.

It worked just fine as a large shower stall.

You're correct that the absence of a bathtub, especially in the master suite, will negatively affect resale value. Americans absolutely insist on having bathtubs, especially the Americans who never use them for anything but showers. They just want the image of themselves sitting in water up to their chins, bubbles around their ears, the room full of candles, incense and soothing music. They just never actually DO it.

I'm looking at being increasingly handicapped, so I'm considering changing out my bath to a shower stall, only, even though I know it will cause prospective buyers to whine about having to put a tub back in.

Most houses overseas and in other parts of this hemisphere feature showers, not bathtubs. I wish we'd catch up.

now happily outside and preparing to be an AWESOME kitchen garden at the base of the steps to the deck, in it's place on the left of the pic is a 5x7 walk in shower. you can see the minuscule old shower in the mirror of the first pic...

4. That cheesy carpeting around it was a great touch

wasn't it? I don't think I've seen that good a picture of the "before" until now. No wonder you got rid of it.

At least mine was off to the side, lacked carpeting, and had the shower as part of the one piece fiberglas unit.

Doesn't exactly give you the leg room to stretch out but there are other models that do. Just google walk-in bathtub and there are a bunch of different ones.
