FINALLY!!!!
So reprehensor and I have been fixing up the house for quite awhile. Initially, it was for an intended move to Canada, but that's out. So it's looking like the Midwest is our next stop.

I'm going up for my new job, and reprehensor is going to have to stay here and fix things up awhile longer. We've been painting and painting and painting, and remodeling our master...etc.

The one thing that has been bugging me EVER since we moved in in December of 2002 was the incredibly hideous and utterly gigantic cheesy brass-finish fireplace surround with the glass doors. reprehensor fought me every time I wanted to take it out. Today I laid down the law. It's a liability, and even the realtor is going to tell you so. It's coming out. Fight me, and I'll belt you.

So we unscrewed it and pulled it out, and I wiped the nasty black tiles down with Trisodium Phosphate. It RULES! Looks like a brand new fireplace. Now, at least we can throw some candles in there or something and use it as a focal point. I think I have gotten rid of every cheesy stock fixture in this house over 5 years. That was the last biggie. Yay me!

1. I always loathed those fireplace surrounds, with or without
the glass. The most I've ever used is a free standing screen, necessary if one is actually going to use the thing and not have to sit and watch for sparks on the floor or carpet, spray bottle in hand.

Congratulations on getting rid of the ugly sucker. I've certainly never seen an attractive one. They remind me of the kind of people who keep plastic covers on the furniture, for some reason, even though people I like have put them in.

2. I've been watching TONS of...
"Designed to Sell", "Sell This House" etc. I know what the hell I'm talking about. But it seems like reprehensor is fighting me every step of the way!

We're both slobs, I'll admit it, but I'm a slob who can alter her behavior when a house needs to be sold. He takes a lot of nagging. He's giving me attitude, and I'm terrified that when I leave the place is going to fall apart and will never get sold.

Example: Next to the coffee machine in the kitchen. Tons of little water bottles, coffee slopped everywhere, and junk everywhere. So I store the junk in the cabinet, and bought him a spoonrest to place his yukky spoons. What does he do? Continues to make a little collection of bottle caps and water bottles on the counter, and uses the spoonrest for a couple weeks without rinsing it off, so it looks just as bad if not worse than the counter. :eyes:

3. Pile of crap v Future $$$?
Maybe if you present that argument, you might prevail.

Ask reprehensor which one he likes best.

5. My husband and I are having the same argument about the
fireplace surround. Ours is mostly black with just a touch of brass but I think it needs to go.

We've replaced all of the light fixtures in the upstairs and I think the surround really needs to go.
