Must see obscurities?
Can people recommend non-mainstream items of quality? Features or shorts with either overall quality or even moments of spectacular interest? We all must have hidden favorites?

The Fabulous Baron Munchausen (Karel Zeman 1963 - NOT the Gilliam version)
Hedgehog in the Fog (Yuri Norstein 1975 Heck, anything by Norstein)
Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure (I like it, anyway... Richard Williams 1977)
Twice Upon a Time (Charles Swenson, John Korty 1983)
Cats Don't Dance (Mark Dindal 1997)
Mighty Orbots (Saturday Morning TV series circa 1984)
A Goofy Movie (Kevin Lima 1995)

I don't list anime, because I don't know of any that is obscure... I have lots of favorites, but all seem so well known in this area...

1. Holy Jesus on a stick - you mentioned the Mighty Orbots!
I thought NO ONE but me remembered it (I don't recall the quality, just its existence).

I always dug the Alf cartoon way more than the sitcom. As far as "hidden favorites", I can't think of any - I doubt I'm so discriminating I could name something obscure.

If you want obscure internet shorts, there I can help you. I like to seek the stuff out, because it's always cool to see what individuals can do in their spare time. Seen some amazing stuff, too.

3. Here's just a fraction of stuff I've seen.
This guy did the infamous Star Wars Gangsta Rap: http://pyropymp.zed.cbc.ca/

This one's audio is obviously amateur, but the animation is professional level: http://newgrounds.com/portal/view/211982

The above guy's demo reel (he's a pro): http://www.artstooge.com/artists/hayk/

Can't decide yet if I like this one: http://newgrounds.com/portal/view/211796

This one is bloody and violent, but impressive both in style and in terms of the amount of work put into it: http://newgrounds.com/portal/view/212095

Most impressive, with fluid motion and a fair amount of humor in a fantasy setting: http://newgrounds.com/portal/view/158417

The above guy's website: http://www.biteycastle.com/html.shtml

Final Fantasy fans: http://newgrounds.com/portal/view/164193 and http://newgrounds.com/portal/view/58184

Legendary Frog: http://www.legendaryfrog.com/

Mega Man fans: http://newgrounds.com/portal/view/188383 and http://newgrounds.com/portal/view/183276

Mario fans: http://newgrounds.com/portal/view/157388 and especially http://newgrounds.com/portal/view/113889 (all three parts, excellent, but DO NOT VISIT THIS GUY'S SITE! It tries to get you to download spyware. Dick.)

They Might Be Giants fans: http://newgrounds.com/portal/view/210440

Weird Al Yankovic fans: http://newgrounds.com/portal/view/132035

Pretty decent: http://newgrounds.com/portal/view/183386

Of course, the obvious HomestarRunner.com

Hope some of those are new to you.

8. BOTS master
is about a teenage genoius who creates concious, self aware robots and is hiding from the big global corporation who wants to make them for evil, it was a really good cartoon show

And Sonic underground is a rare somic the hedgehog cartoon show that i loved

Also the starship troopers cartoon show (cg animated, alot closer to the book than the movie)

And the hour long Mortal Kombat TV series are good

20. EXO Squad
Edited on Sat Feb-10-07 10:28 PM by JonathanChance
An American series from the early-mid 90s with a mecha anime like storyline. Was a decent series for an American cartoon, but would have been so much better if they would have targetted it towards a younger audience.

18. Rene Laloux did a couple others worth seeing
Edited on Sun Feb-04-07 06:13 PM by 0rganism
Light Years/Gandahar: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095525/ (collaboration with Isaac Asimov, 1988)
Time Masters: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084315/ (collaboration with Jean Giraud aka Moebius, 1982)

They were pretty edgy in their day -- not so phenomenal now, but still worth seeing for a pre-Akira perspective on how things have changed on the "serious" animation scene.

9. Gankutsuoh
Imagine The Count of Monte Cristo told by Japanese Anime artists with a access to CGI and a surreal furturistic setting. If you can find or catch this it is a visual kalidescope of settings.

15. "The Forbidden Quest" (1993)
The tale of a doomed Antarctic expedition. I found the story more memorable and frightening than films done with far larger budgets. (And to think that they accomplished this using mainly archival footage and one actor in a darkened room.)

21. "Raggedy Ann & Andy" WOW!
I remember the teacher let us watch that in 4th or 5th grade for a break (Catholic School.)

I still remember the two dancing dolls that sang in unison and the Camel.

22. I loved "The Last Unicorn"
Not great animation, and a little dark for kids. The book is better, but I loved the movie.
