When or why did you start doing what you do?
Edited on Sat Apr-14-07 03:56 PM by sfexpat2000
I was 30 and got an R C Gorman book accidentally. I loved his line drawings of those women with huge hands and feet, the way their hair was folded. So, after 30 years of knowing I couldn't draw, I started drawing because I couldn't afford to buy his work or even reproductions.

And all the work I'd done over the years with my hands -- painting walls, hanging drywall, sewing, crafts, whatever, sort of came together and I found out my hands were more coordinated than I was. And that the time and space where I drew, then painted, was better than sex.

What about you?

Edit: When Doug was ill, I started a cartoon about his character -- to keep it going. That was fun and a long way from trying to duplicate R C Gorman. :)

1. Here's another one. Doug used to have a recurring dream
that we called "the running dream" where all kinds of obstacles prevented him from getting on stage or on the air at the right time -- no pants, lost, wrong club, angry women.

God, I was and am so in love with those women he made.

2. It's a Really, Really Long Story

But to boil it down to one thing, it was an act of defiance against the idea that art is made by Special people with Special talents and Special skills and contained in Special places.

I picked up a brush after a trip to the UK, where art is everywhere, for every purpose. From architecture to household appliances to neighborhood doors, mailboxes and gardens. That was not quite two years ago.

5. The first thing I drew was Spider Woman taking a bath.
In other words, a nude. Midway, all I could think about was how horrified my grandmother would have been.

lol

7. I've drawn
since I could hold a crayon! I actually remember my first art lesson. I was about 4 and drew a picture of our dog in the yard. My sky was the typical 4 year old inch of blue at the top of the drawing. My dad took me out side and showed me the sky and how the blue went all the way down to the ground. So I went back with my blue crayon and finished my drawing with the sky going down to the ground. My first lesson on learning to see and translate what I saw to the paper was a success.

I mostly do digital photography now but still paint and have started to do pastels. Mostly I post stuff over in the photography group but I will put up on of my pastels soon.

Here's one of my digital prints.

8. Hard to say.
I've taken a long, strange path to get to where I am.

I guess "professionally" it went:

Sewing
Scrimshaw
metal engraving
welding
furniture restoration
freestyle woodworking
silversmithing
painting
and recently, some paper maché.

And a million and one things in between/simultaneously,
tying it all together into into a continuous process
that makes a fine substitute for an actual LIFE, IMHO!

10. I feel more alive when I'm making than at any other time
Edited on Sat Jun-16-07 02:03 PM by sfexpat2000
with the possible exception of when I'm watching an animal -- cat, dog, the ravens that own this hood.

And hey! I learned to restore furniture, too! My first hubby did it at work and didn't do it at home but he taught me how. Everything from burn ins --> upholstery. :)

11. About 5 years ago
I finally got the courage to do what I've wanted to do for a long time. Create something, anything, on paper! I am a lifelong doodler and sketcher. When I allowed myself to create art frame it and hung it where others could see, I was LIBERATED! :)

I can't remember how to link my stuff to this page though...........
