I'm usually in the photography group, but lately I've been working on some photo-based digital art that I thought might fit in better here:

It's all done in Photoshop.

My technique varies depending on the picture, but this is my basic plan of attack:

I use a noise-reducing filter and desaturate the picture.

Then I do all of the burning, dodging, brightness, and contrast adjustments that I would do if I were going to print the picture as a photo (sometimes painting the background black).

I play around with various "artistic" filters until I find an effect that I like. I often combine them.

At that point, I play around with the "levels" on the picture until the lighting looks good.

Then I either tone the picture or hand-paint it.



It usually takes a bit of trial-and-error.



The whole process is something that I came up with while trying to salvage some very poor photographs with too few pixels and way too much noise (the black-and-white of the young man on the couch is a good example).
