Two lenses
I picked up a used lens today. (Focal 28mm f2.8). I took an image with it, switched lens to my Yashinon 50mm to see if there was much in the way of difference in sharpness. I used the same M42 to M 4/3 mount. It was darker (redder sky) when I took the Yashinon image, so the noise is more pronounced. I applied the same level of wavelet sharpening and white balance on these images. CA seems to be more pronounced on the Focal. I wasn't expecting too much from the Focal because you really don't know who actually made it. It is smooth operating, unlike the Yashinon. I will do a more controlled comparison, but it appears that there's not much difference in sharpness. These are hand held so there could be variations in focus.

The Focal focuses beyond infinity.

1. I'll be interested in seeing the more controlled comparison.

2. I'm pretty much happy with the Yashinon for Macro. The
Focal 28 would be 56mm due to the 2x from the m 43 sensor. It's for general walk around days.
Tomorrow, if I have the time, I will set up a test.

3. Two shots, both with same lighting and f5.6. 100% zoom
Because of the different focal lengths, there will be some variation, but I think you can see a bit of difference between the two when it comes to sharpness. It isn't enough to be a problem in the real world. Sharpening in PP will fix any perceived differences. Both images are OOC. No PP other than cropping.

So what do you think?

4. Interesting
The Focal is a smidge less sharp and slightly darker but 28mm might make it interesting for street shooting.

7. But on the m4/3 sensor it is 56mm. I see it as a general
walk about lens. My first years were spent using a 50mm as my primary lens.

Forgot to add: used the Focal 28mm. Bokeh is OK.

8. Glad to see ya' using "legacy lenses". You can get OM Zuiko 50 1.8
lenses on Ebay really cheap. I think you'll find them even more pleasing. I use the 50 1.8 for portraiture on my 620. I tried it on the 500 but the viewfinder was too small and dark to focus effectively. The 620 is bigger and brighter plus the live view feature makes it even easier.

There's just somethin' about prime lenses . . .

9. My next purchase will be the Oly 17mm. A telephoto is
on my list, but not for a while. The 40~150 Oly looks pretty good for the money. buying a legacy manual 135mm would be OK too.
