How Mom showed us a good time in Key West tonight
My Mom (86) has come to Key West for a good while to kick up her heels, and this is the time she knows will be the last time.
We made it up the steps...

and got a seat

She is adamant in taking part in everything and even though her knee is doubled in size from a fall 10 days ago, and she is hurting a lot while getting around she is managing to be with us in body, not just in spirit.

Tequila sunrise drinks. Happy Hour. 2 for 1. We had a few.

With her nephew helping we made it down again.

Slowly on to Mallorey Square, the Southern most spot in the US, the famous sunset.
Then we were off to Hemingway's Sloppy Joe's Bar which was too crowded for us to sit, so we went and sat under the bras & license plates and about a million business cards on the ceiling of Captain Tony's.
Her wish.

In the sunset of our lives I hope we all have such a hunger to experience and enjoy living.

GO MOM.

1. Don't tell your mother if it would offend her
but I love her. The third photo captures a long life with all its joys and sorrows right there in her face. Seeing her, I understand what a triumph it is to live so long, and still love life. Despite the hurts and the frailness that the years endow. And I want her to return there next year and have a hell of a good time.

2. ...

this hug is from her, though I don't think I will show her the post. You can imagine there are more photos, and when we sat together and ran through them we, I think, all laughed so hard we wet our pants just a little...

I'm absolutely amazed at her need to be right there in the middle.

I write about her after I tucked her in bed with an ice pack on the leg, and a Vicoden.

6. Excellent post, Jeff.
Just what I was thinking. She is definitely one of the rare few that I encounter these days, and they are always real gems.

Mira...I wish her another year, at least, in the Keys in good health and her present hunger for life.

:hi:

Wow, look at that last photo. I would never guess she was 86. You are making me want to go to Key West, by the way!

4. She's great!
I noticed they asked for ID at that bar. Did they card her? :-)

8. Thank you for sharing your adventures!
I love your photos and the captions, not to mention your mother too! I especially love her impish expression in the last photo -- almost like she knows something juicy and she ain't tellin'... maybe something to do with all those bras...

12. She seems quite lovely and endearing
I can imagine her thinking that her knee is not going to hold her back...not when there is a finite amount of time left on this trip to see what there is to see and drink what there is to drink :)
