New lens!
HullBoss is spoiling me again. For an early anniversary present, he gave me the Canon 100-400 L lens. Just in time for summer, too, with the birds and wildlife. :)

Here are a few test shots handheld at 400 mm. I took these from the place where I usually take my Anchorage skyline pictures. The amplification is incredible and opens up a whole new world. It'll be fun to try this in full daylight. The hotel with the flags on it is about four miles from here.

This is looking across Knik Arm to the Talkeetna Mountains, about 30-40 miles away.

1. Sigh
You're going to be dangerous with that thing. The Talkeetna Mountains were my fav until I saw pussy willows. Yes it will be a whole new world for all of us. I can't wait. :) Thank HullBoss for me too.

Check out the old contest threads in the rules thread. Where are your flowers? I think Algomas won that one but might of been you. Been to long.

6. That was one of my bleeding heart shots,
and I can't remember which one, but I remember that it did well. I don't think I won the contest, though. For all the times I've entered, I've only come in first a couple of times. Remember your topic "Strength" and my glacier?

I clear out my PhotoBucket every now and then because I get too many pictures in there and can't find anything.

3. Ma'am, I can only hope you get him such great presents too.
Just watch for the apertures, which are a lot slower than your mainstays. I don't envy you carting 3 pounds of lens around. A monopod would be a good idea, IS or no.

4. Yes, we had thought about the monopod idea.
I had the ISO set at 200 for these since it was cloudy and late in the day. I probably could have gone a little higher to compensate. The cameras now have such great noise reduction at the higher ISOs.

I'm just looking forward to getting out in some bright sun with some animals. I'm thinking particularly of the Dall sheep which are usually on a hillside just a little out of range of the 70-200. Also the next time I see something spouting off in the water, I'll know whether it's an orca or a gray whale. I'm still not sure which I got shots of in Kodiak -- I think they were orcas because I did see a flash of black fin every now and then when I magnified the shots in the camera, but honestly I couldn't even really see them with my naked eyes since my eyesight is not the best. Jim would be all excited pointing, and I couldn't see a thing so I just pointed the camera in that direction and pressed the button. I was amazed I got anything at all. :)
