4. I was so pleased that the other photographer was there

to provide the silhouette. I don't think she even knew I was taking her picture. I was also impressed by the very bright sundog. A lot of times I have trouble getting the colors to show when I photograph these, but I think I got it this time.

Here's just one more taken a little later with more of the reds.





Now I'm going back to my Iditarod shots. I'm almost finished with the editing, then some captions and I'll be ready to share. :)

5. Try experimenting with shooting for a while after the color seems to have faded.

The human eye has both color sensor (cones) and B/W brightness sensors (rods). The result is that as the light fades, the colors may change but not be gone. Too dimly lit for the cones on the retina to respond and react to, so we see only grays, but with a long exposure the camera sensors will pick up the color.

Gave my 2nd son, another naturally gifted photographer, a UNI-LOC (very versatile) tripod a couple years ago. Never used it. OK, awkward to use without a ballhead, Actually that was the second run through of that sequence of events, but the last pair, including a very nice Gitzo ballhead, got lost in somewhere Hawaii haze. Anyway I sent him another decent ballhead.

He's since (finally!) began using it after I showed him some longer flowing water exposures (full seconds instead of 1/100th's).

Now, to get him to use some processing software to reveal a bit more of what his photos don't show but his eye saw. My favorite was a total bust.

I think this summer when it's a little warmer I'll probably be more likely to use the tripod. Sometimes it's just too cold to fiddle with it.
