Scanning medium (or larger) format negatives
Mr. csziggy just returned from a visit to his Mom. One of the things she dug out for him to "do something" with was a box of B&W negatives. Each negative measures 7cm x 11 cm with one image per negative. They were taken in the 1890s to maybe 1910 by his great-grandfather who was an artist. Some were taken while the family was in Paris and include photos of a great aunt who died in Europe as a child.

I want to scan them but the flat bed scanners that I can find in my price range can only scan up to medium format film with sizes 6 cm up to 22 cm. When they are using these measurements, are they only talking about the image size, allowing extra area in their negative carriers for an edge that would make the actual size our 7 cm?

I have considerable experience with scanning negatives and slides with dedicated slide/negative scanners, but have only scanned 35mm. I have some old negatives that are slightly wider than 35mm, so a wider capacity scanner would be nice.

So far I am considering the Epson V600 or maybe will splurge for the Epson V500 since it has a document page feeder and a legal size platen both of which would be useful for other projects. Through NewEgg I can get the V600 for $212 and the V500 for $270. The Epson v700 or v750 would be ideal - they can scan 8x10" large format negatives, but they are out of my price range at 530+ for the v700 and $760 for the V750.

Thus the question about the sizes for "medium format" - anybody here know?

allow me to photograph negatives of that size though . That might be an option for you, if you already own a scanner you're happy with and don't want to shell out for another. It used a T-Mount I believe so it should work fine with other brands, and if I remember correctly, it was in the $50-60 dollar range.
