Vancouver 2010 - Day 1 - HappyCynic version Part II: Night (Dial-up warning)
Here's the second part of my Olympic Day 1 photos. These are some of the shots I took during the early night (around 6-8 pm). I took a lot more but those will be in additional threads. From the looks of Tindalos' Day 1 photos (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=280x69472), it looks like we were in roughly the same place at the same time but somehow missed each other. At night, it was like a very strange carnival had taken over the downtown core of Vancouver.

Here's a shot of the Granville strip. A good portion of Robson street is closed off for the Olympics. Robson runs perpendicular to Granville and this is where they intersect. The crowds are just as big as earlier in the day.

Here's a non-busking (and I believe "unscheduled") entertainer. He quite skillfully rolled the crystal ball around including around his back on his shoulders (which I don't have any good shots of). After he finished, he ran off... Literally.

This is what I can only describe as a micro-parade. It was pretty small and I believe it ties in with the Chinese New Year. (The red sashes are the giveaway.) One funny thing... About half an hour after this shot, the micro-parade was going down another street and I heard someone ask regarding the main figure: "Is that Jesus?"

Sure doesn't look like Jesus here...

There were some stilt-walkers making the rounds. Often preceding them was someone who served as ground-level support for them.

And here are the stilt-walkers.

And what carnival would be complete without fairy dancers?

1. Party, party, party
Love these night and party type shots. Between you and Tindalos, I am getting into the Olympic spirit.

Thank you.

2. We really did just miss each other
I think I was just the other side of the dancers. Missed the stilt-walkers though.

Jesus? Um... hmmm....

I overheard someone asking what the olympic torch was supposed to be made of, ice? It was tempting to say, "No, it's kryptonite. Superman's Canadian doncha know."
